In today’s NFL, teams that are unable to generate pressure on opposing quarterbacks are generally in trouble. Nearly every starting quarterback in the league can look like a solid player, if they have a clean pocket. That is why free agent edge rushers are such a hot commodity, and they are being paid more than ever.

Jadeveon Clowney

The Houston Texans proved last season that they’re not afraid to trade their stars, when they send Jadeveon Clowney to the Seattle Seahawks. Now, he becomes a free agent for the first time in his career.
When looking at Clowney’s 2019 stats, you would expect that he had a poor season. However, he had the seventh-best pass rush win rate among edge defenders, so the potential to be a monster going forward is still there. Clowney also came up big in the playoffs, totaling 1.5 sacks, three quarterback hits and three tackles for a loss.
Depending on his asking rate, Clowney is likely the most-coveted free agent edge rusher out there right now, considering his talent and they he is only 27 years old.
Everson Griffen
2019 Stats: 8 Sacks | 24 QB Hits | 11 TFL | 1 INT
The long-time Minnesota Viking opted out of his contract and will look for a new team for the first time in his career. Despite being 32 years old, Everson Griffen continues to be among the best at putting pressure on quarterbacks, totaling eight sacks and 24 QB hits last season. He has totaled at least eight sacks and 20 QB hits in five of his last six seasons, with the one exception being in 2018, when he missed five games.
News surrounding Griffen has been surprisingly quiet, but he will end up being a tremendous signing for the team lucky enough to get him.
Cameron Wake
2019 Stats: 2.5 Sacks | 11 QB Hits | 2 TFL
Cameron Wake has been among the top edge rushers in the NFL for the past decade, but at 38 years young, he is mostly a situational player now. Last season, he played nine games for the Tennessee Titans. which was only his second team his 11-year career.
He is more than capable of coming in on third-and-long and getting after the quarterback. A contender that is looking for cheap and talented depth on defense should give the veteran a call.
