Week 5 is here. With bye weeks here, all of a sudden we need to start taking a little closer look at our NFL Survivor Pool Picks. Both the Kansas City Chiefs and Carolina Panthers are off this week, meaning that we are down teams available to pick. If you are unaware of what NFL Survivor picks are, the basic concept is that you make NFL picks throughout the season, but you can only pick a team once. Once you lose, you’re knocked out, so choose your Week 5 NFL Survivor Pool picks wisely.
If you are new to reading my survivor articles, what I do is outline my “lock of the week,” my “value of the week,” and my “high-risk, high-reward pick of the week.”
The “lock” details what team I think has the best chance of winning their matchup. This will most likely be a good team that plays a bad team. The lock is also the official pick for NFL Survivor Pools, meaning we will not reuse a “lock.” My value pick details a mid-tier team that has a good matchup. And finally, my high-risk, high-reward pick details a bad team that has a good matchup. It may be worth it to look at the NFL betting odds for these games and place some bets as well.

Lock of the Week | Best Pick for NFL Survivor Pool Picks Week 5
Houston Texans vs Tennessee Titans
The Houston Texans come into their Week 5 matchup with the Tennessee Titans as 7.5-point favorites. That may be one of the highest spreads for a winless team in NFL history at Week 5. While it may be hard to imagine that a winless team is the Lock of the Week, that is exactly the case with the Houston Texans this week.
This is a matchup where that vaunted Texans defense can finally get into stride going up against a Tennessee offense that has struggled to move the ball at times this season. With how strong that pass rush is between Will Anderson and Danielle Hunter, Cam Ward will be under pressure the entire game. Add to the fact that Derek Stingley will be able to shut down Carnell Tate and Tennessee is going to struggle to score in this matchup.
On the other side of the ball, Houston will have a great opportunity to get their run game going with David Montgomery and Woody Marks, as the Titans are giving up just short of 100 rushing yards per game. Once the run game gets going, it becomes much easier for the pass game. CJ Stroud has done a great job at taking care of the ball, not throwing an interception yet this season. There is obviously a strong connection with Nico Collins, and with nothing that scares you on the Titans’ defense, I am expecting Houston to be able to move the ball at will this week.
According to our NFL Survivor Pool picks tool, the Houston Texans have the highest pick score of the week. Check out our free tool to see who the next highest scores are!

Cincinnati Bengals vs Miami Dolphins
The Cincinnati Bengals come into their Week 5 matchup against the Miami Dolphins as seven-point favorites, which makes sense considering how much the Dolphins have struggled to score points this season. This year, the Dolphins have yet to score more than 13 points in a game through four weeks. While they may be able to score more than 13 points in this matchup, it is hard to believe that they are able to beat the Bengals this week. It will be tough for Miami to run the ball, as they are down De’Von Achane and the Cincinnati ranks eighth in opponent rushing yards this season. For more stats like this, visit our Playbook tool. Cincinnati’s game plan is going to be to make Malik Willis beat them, and seeing that he has one touchdown pass on the season, it is hard to say that Willis is going to do that.
Looking at the Bengals offense, Ja’Marr Chase may miss the game, but that should not be too big of an issue. Tee Higgins will probably be available, and Dohnte Meyers has looked great during his time on the field this season. This is also a game where Chase Brown will get going, as he will be used both as a runner and receiver in the game. Even without Chase, this Bengals team just features way more star power than the Dolphins, making this an easy win for Cincinnati.

High Risk, High Reward Pick | Week 5 NFL Survivor Pool Picks
Cleveland Browns vs New York Jets
Given their play this season, the Cleveland Browns may have graduated out of the high-risk, high reward territory this season, but they actually come in as 1.5-point underdogs in the road against the New York Jets this week. Even with the Jets playing at home, this is an interesting line to look at considering that the Browns are playing some of their best football since Baker Mayfield was starting under center.
The Jets really struggled, especially defensively, against Chicago last week. The Bears were able to dominate the game using the run last week, something that I think the Browns can do as well this week. We saw the Browns rush for 112 yards against the Steelers last week and Quinshon Judkins finally got into the end zone. Deshaun Watson has been playing solid football this season, but once that run game gets going, it will be a lot easier for the pass game to open up, and with their rookies in KC Concepcion and Denzel Boston, along with Harold Fannin, it seems like any play the Browns run on offense could go for a touchdown through the air.
