There was a lot of excitement in New York ahead of Padres vs Mets Game 1, and it vanished quickly. New York Mets’ starter Max Scherzer struggled mightily and surrendered seven runs in just 4 2/3 innings of work. The San Diego Padres mashed four home runs in just the first five innings and are now just one win away from an NLDS matchup with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Will the Mets add to their playoff-choking history, or can they make this a series?

This MLB betting preview for the NL Wild Card MLB Playoffs Padres vs Mets Game 2 includes game info, starting pitchers, betting odds, trends and a prediction for tonight’s postseason matchup.

Mets: Jacob DeGrom (5-4, 3.08 ERA)

    San Diego Padres Preview

With a raucous crowd in Queens, New York, it was crucial for San Diego to set the tone early. They were able to do that and then some. Before fans could blink the Padres took a two run lead thanks to a two-run moonshot home run by Josh Bell. The hits kept coming and by the time Scherzer exited the game, the contest was already over. This type of offensive output can’t be expected every night, but if their offense outside of Manny Machado can heat up, this team can beat anyone.

If facing hot Padres bats wasn’t bad enough, the Mets had to face off against Yu Darvish. Darvish had a masterclass performance, going seven full innings while giving up just one earned run. Most importantly for the Padres, they didn’t have to use any of their big time arms in the bullpen. Fully rested and with Blake Snell on the hill who has recently been in a groove, the Padres have as good of a shot as any to send the Mets packing early.

    New York Mets Preview

The good news for the Mets is that this was only one game. The bad news is now they have absolutely no margin for error. When taking into account the team’s history and how many of their players have fared on the big stage historically, it may officially be panic time. Although it has just been one game, the Mets are nine innings away from being knocked out of the playoffs after a 101 win season.

The Mets have to keep their crowd in it in Game 2. The Mets’ bats fell silent when the game started to get out of hand and they clearly fed off the crowd a lot. While the Mets are favored in Game 2, it is pivotal that they start off on the right foot. While Jacob DeGrom is statistically one of the best pitchers of all time, he has given up three or more earned runs in his last four starts with the Mets losing three of them. With everything on the line, can the Mets get a win?
