Many are saying Virginia is on upset alert in this first-round matchup with Furman. It is hard not to feed into that narrative, as we all remember how Virginia was upset by UMBC a few years ago.
Virginia can be prone to upsets due to their style of play. Since they play a slow, methodical offense, opponents that are able to play fast and control the pace can come away with wins. Momentum is certainly on Furman’s side as well, since they are 14-1 in their last 15 games.
While Furman does place faster than Virginia, they’re not exactly “fast.” They are a better rebounding team and shoot free throws better, which could be the difference in the game. However, Furman also turns the ball over and gets into foul trouble more often.
In the end, I do think Virginia barely gets the win. However, I hate where the point spread is currently and have zero desire to bet on it. Instead, we will bet on the point total. Missed free throws, good enough perimeter defense and the slow pace of Virginia will keep the score low.
