Thursday’s MLB action is spaced all throughout the day. Games will start as early as noon on the east coast and extend deep into the night. For fans of the NL West and the hard-core baseball junkies among us, the defending World Series Champions will take center stage in the late-night nationally televised matchup as the Los Angeles Dodgers will aim to earn a three-game sweep of the division-rival Colorado Rockies. It comes as no surprise that the MLB betting odds heavily favor the home team.

Many in the MLB betting community had a hunch that this would be a tough year for the Rockies in the win-loss column. Colorado lost two veteran stalwarts in Daniel Murphy (retirement) and Nolan Arenado (traded to the Cardinals). Just a few seasons removed from their last postseason appearance, Colorado is in full-scale rebuilding mode. If there is one silver lining for fans, it’s that Colorado would have to be better than good to even compete for an NL West Divison title this season. The Dodgers are loaded and the San Diego Padres aren’t far behind. Perhaps the Rockies rebuild will turn out to be as timely as it is painful.
Southpaw Austin Gomber will make his third appearance of the season as the Rockies starter this evening. One of his prior outings saw him surrender three runs in as many innings to the same Dodgers lineup he’ll face tonight. In a start last week against the San Francisco Giants, Gomber pitched well over 6.1 innings but still took the loss. Like any pitcher, he’ll need run support if he’s going to topple the mighty world champs. The Rockies have only scored two runs in the first two games of this series combined. Trevor Story notched a hit and RBI in yesterday’s contest while Raimel Tapia had two hits and a walk in his five plate appearances.
While they did hoist the Commissioner’s Trophy last season, many MLB betting fans have a hard time counting the weird 2020 season for much in the record books. As if this uber-talented Dodgers squad needed any extra motivation, right? Los Angeles has bolted out of the gates to a 10-2 start in 2021. They’ll look to win their sixth straight game tonight ahead of a highly-anticipated weekend series against the aforementioned Padres.
Julio Urias will draw the start for L.A. this evening. He shut down the Rockies back on April 4th to the tune of just three hits and a single run over seven innings. After being touched up a bit by the Washington Nationals his last time out, Urias will look to steady the ship. Unlike Colorado, run support doesn’t figure to be a major concern. Justin Turner continues to get it done at the plate at the age of 36. His two hits in yesterday’s win included a two-run homer. Mookie Betts also reached base in three of his five plate appearances on Wednesday.

On paper, it’s no wonder that the MLB betting total for this game is set low at 7.5. The Rockies can’t hit and the Dodgers pitching is as close to lights out as it gets. Yet, the only option here for me is to take a stab at the over. Just as they rank top three in runs allowed per game, Los Angeles is also a top-three scoring offense. They scored at a pace of one run per inning against Austin Gomber the first time they faced him this season. And while Julio Urias is better than the back-end rotation starters on the majority of MLB teams, he certainly isn’t the Dodgers ace. I fully expect L.A. to get theirs and I think Colorado can make up the difference to send this one over.
Pick: Over 7.5 (-115)
