With the Super Bowl LIX on Sunday, both Philadelphia and Kansas City will be looking for big performances from their stars to propel a victory. Fans are always looking for the player who is going to step up in the big game. Most of the time big stars are the ones to step up. Players like Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes and Deion Sanders have all put together some of their biggest moments in the spotlight, leading to some incredible Super Bowl records and stats.

NFL history is going to be made in this game. Either Kansas City will win their fifth Super Bowl and third in a row, or Philadelphia will win their second. More than that, players in this game are trying to stake their claim among Brady, Peyton Manning, Ray Lewis and other all-time greats. Can those performances add to the already storied history that has accounted for mind-blowing Super Bowl stats of the past?

Let’s take a look at some of those incredible Super Bowl records that may never be touched.

    Career Super Bowl Records

    Tom Brady Records

We can’t start talking about Super Bowl records without mentioning the greatest football player of all time, Tom Brady. Brady’s records start with the most games played (10) and most Super Bowl wins (7). On top of that, Brady has also put together career records for passing. He is the all-time leader in completions (277), passing yards (3,039) and most passing touchdowns (21). The craziest part of these records is that Brady’s wins total more Super Bowl wins than every other franchise in the NFL.

    Most Total Touchdowns Scored

If Tom Brady did not have more Super Bowl wins than every other franchise in the NFL, Jerry Rice would probably be considered the greatest football player of all time. Rice’s incredible accomplishments happened in more than just the regular season though. Jerry Rice is the all-time leader in touchdowns scored in the Super Bowl, with eight. That number becomes even harder to comprehend when you learn that Rice played in four Super Bowls, meaning he averaged two touchdowns in every Super Bowl he played in.

Most Losses By a Head Coach

While most Super Bowl records are for the better, some of them are just downright stinkers. There has to be no worse feeling than battling all season long to fall just short on the biggest stage. As it stands, there are three coaches who are tied for the most losses in Super Bowl history. The first on the list is Bud Grant, who lost four Super Bowls as a part of the Minnesota Vikings in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The next is Dan Reeves, who lost three Super Bowls as a part of the Denver Broncos in the 1980s. In a twisted turn of fate, Reeves found himself battling his former team as a coach of the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl 33. He, of course, lost that game. Neither of these two coaches compares to Marv Levy though, who lost four straight Super Bowls as a part of the Buffalo Bills.

    Single Game Super Bowl Records

    Most Passing Yards

What is the list without one more Tom Brady record? In one of the most exciting Super Bowls of all time, Brady threw for 505 yards against the Philadelphia Eagles. While the Eagles are mainly talked about in this game, and rightfully so, Brady’s 505 passing yards is a sneaky underrated performance in NFL history. Not only do the 505 passing yards rank as the most in a playoff game, but if it were ranked among all games in NFL history, Brady would have the 19th most passing yards in a game. This performance also ranks as Brady’s second-most passing yards in any game played.

    Most Receptions

Out of all of the crazy Super Bowl records in NFL history, this one may be the strangest. When talking about the most receptions in Super Bowl history, a couple of names come to mind – Jerry Rice, Travis Kelce and Rob Gronkowski. A wide receiver or a tight end makes sense for this, but it is in fact running back James White who leads every player for most receptions in a Super Bowl. As a part of the 28-3 comeback against the Atlanta Falcons, White was the main benefactor of Brady’s 43 completions. White was fantastic all day, reeling in 14 catches for 110 yards and one touchdown.

    Most Interceptions-Returned-For-Touchdowns

In one of the craziest performances in NFL history, regardless of game, Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive back Dwight Smith intercepted two Oakland Raiders passes and returned them both for touchdowns. In a game where the Bucs destroyed the Raiders, 48-21, it was actually Smith who led the game in touchdowns, with two.

    Single Play Super Bowl Records

    Longest Completion

In one of the craziest games in Super Bowl history, an unlikely duo put together the record for the longest completion in the big game. Down by five points with just under seven minutes left, Carolina Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme connected with wide receiver Mushin Muhammad for an 85-yard touchdown. This may be a record that can be broken, maybe even this year with Xavier Worthy and DeVonta Smith on the field.

    Longest Kick-Return TD

After a Super Bowl halftime that was marked with a blackout, Jacoby Jones got the Ravens’ second half started hot with a Super Bowl-record 108-yard kick return touchdown. Along with Dwight Smith’s pick-six record, Jones’ kick return record may never be broken. Given the state of the kickoff in the game today, return touchdowns are becoming less and less prevalent. On top of the longest kick return in Super Bowl history, Jones also recorded the second-longest play in football history.

    Longest Field Goal Made

The newest Super Bowl record added to the list came last year. Starting at their own 14-yard line, the Kansas City Chiefs marched down to the San Francisco 49ers’ 40-yard line in the third quarter. On fourth-and-long, Andy Reid entrusted his franchise kicker Harrison Butker to bring the Chiefs to within four points. Nailing a 57-yard field goal, I think that this is a record that may take a while to be broken. Not many teams will bet their Super Bowl lives on a player who plays such a minimal part of the game. However, we do know one coach who is willing to roll the dice — Andy Reid.
