The entire situation surrounding Brendan Sorsby has been fascinating, entertaining, frustrating and mishandled overall. It finally felt like it would be coming to an end by him entering the NFL Supplemental Draft. This led to panic in many dynasty fantasy football leagues, as it was an unprecedented situation that was confusing to handle.
Ultimately, most dynasty leagues decided there would be an auction for the services of Sorsby, with teams being able to bid next season’s draft picks. This is similar to the actual NFL Supplemental Draft. All that was left was for him to be drafted so he could be added to fantasy platforms.
However, we received a major update to the situation on Tuesday. The NFL has made the decision not to have a supplemental draft this season, despite Sorsby being a top prospect. Let’s discuss what happened and how this will affect the Brendan Sorsby fantasy draft stock.
NFL Supplemental Draft Updates, Brendan Sorsby Has to Wait
It is not a given that there is a supplemental draft in the NFL. In fact, it’s quite rare. It takes place if there is a player talented enough to make teams interested, and they must have had various circumstances that affected their eligibility to be in the actual NFL Draft. Since 1977, there have been 46 NFL Supplemental Draft picks, with the most recent being Jalen Thompson in 2019.
In the case of Brendan Sorsby, he is certainly talented enough to garner interest. If he were in the 2026 NFL Draft, there is a strong chance he would have been considered a first-round talent. But what were the circumstances that affected his eligibility? Brendan Sorsby opted not to enter the NFL Draft. Since then, he was busted for gambling on his college football games, resulting in punishment at the college level. He filed a lawsuit against the NCAA and won, so he technically could play in 2026. However, he opted to apply for the NFL Supplemental Draft. Many projected a team to give up a second-round draft pick to take Sorsby.
On Tuesday, Sorsby’s petition for the NFL Supplemental Draft was declined. This is not surprising, given the NFL’s strong stance against gambling. It would be hypocritical for the league to accept that his punishment for sports gambling was a valid circumstance to warrant a supplemental draft. This is the full response he received:
“The League does not have the complete record of the NCAA’s investigation, and you did not provide any such materials with your Petition. Available information nonetheless indicates that, over the course of your collegiate career, you knowingly engaged in repeated and significant violations of NCAA rules designed to preserve the integrity of athletic competition. Reported conduct includes placing wagers on your own team and teammates and, to avoid detection, establishing or funding accounts in the names of intermediaries who placed bets on your behalf. There are also reports that you may have violated state criminal law.
“Your Petition does not address these matters. Nor does it demonstrate accountability for your conduct or indicate whether, or how, you would adhere to the League’s rules and policies governing the integrity of competition. Instead, even after receiving notice of the NCAA’s decision rescinding your college eligibility in May, you sought to avoid the consequences of that determination through litigation rather than accepting responsibility for your actions, and you pursued entry into the NFL only after abandoning those efforts.”

Brendan Sorsby Fantasy Football Outlook
So… what now? The NFL wants Brendan Sorsby to learn his lesson, so he likely will go through the process of preparing for the 2027 NFL Draft. Unfortunately for him, next season’s draft class is much more talented at the skill positions, especially at quarterback. If he were in this season’s draft, there is a strong chance he would have been QB2. Now, he will be compared to the likes of Arch Manning, Dante Moore, Drew Mestemaker and more, but they will have the ability to showcase their skills and he won’t.
The saying of “out of sight, out of mind” is very real, and that could be the case for Sorsby. Other players will get the ability to showcase their skills every week and get better in front of everyone. Not only will Sorsby not get this, but he will also not have experience playing in real game speed for over a year. He will be viewed as a “project” prospect with off-field issues, which is not great for his draft stock.
As for the Brendan Sorsby fantasy football value, this could mean he falls in the draft. This is bad for his wallet, but it could mean he falls into a better situation, as the worse teams pick earlier. On top of that, he will likely not be viewed as NFL-ready. So, after sitting out a season, he will likely have a redshirt year in the NFL as well. How much time can a quarterback spend not taking meaningful snaps and still be effective? That will be a major question next spring.
For now, Brendan Sorsby will not be on your fantasy football team this season, so you won’t have to worry about that process this season. The 2027 dynasty fantasy football rookie class did just get a bit better, which will be interesting to track. Check out my 2026 dynasty fantasy football rookie rankings here!
