It is no secret that dynasty fantasy football has exploded into the mainstream lately. While redraft leagues still reign supreme, dynasty has grown to be extremely loved by those who are looking to play fantasy football longer than just 17 weeks. Both dynasty and redraft leagues center around the same premise, constructing a lineup of players who you think have the best chances of racking up major stats in any given week. While this is the case, redraft ends when the regular season ends. If you had a bad year, no worries, you have another chance next year. With dynasty though, there is no drafting again. For the most part, the team that you initially start with is the team that you are going to have to play with for the entirety of the league.

With that being said, if you are just joining a dynasty fantasy football league, or are stuck in purgatory in your league, I have three tips that will help you kick start your team or get you out of the laughing stock of last place.

Dynasty Fantasy Football Tips

There is No Such Thing as Too Many Quarterbacks

When we are looking at building a roster in dynasty fantasy football, the prevailing thought is that you want players on your team that are going to be playing on their teams for a long time. Out of the four main positions in fantasy football, quarterbacks are the one that have the longest shelf life. If a quarterback is good enough to start in the NFL, they are likely good enough to start for a long time, meaning quarterback is a position that you can put into your lineup and build around without much thought.

The flip side to quarterbacks providing so much value, is that there is a limited number of the position that are going to be on the field on a week-to-week basis. That creates an interesting supply and demand in fantasy. Especially in a superflex or multiple quarterback league, the amount of available quarterbacks on waivers drop dramatically, meaning if you are one of those teams that suffers a season ending injury to your QB1 and you don’t have a backup plan, you are going to be at a major disadvantage. Dynasty leagues also tend to trend towards larger benches compared to that of redraft, meaning that if you have the available space, you need to have your quarterback’s backup. Or if a team is using a quarterback committee or a veteran to start in front of a rookie, you need to have both players. Take Fernando Mendoza for example. If you drafted Mendoza in your rookie draft, that probably means you are need of a quarterback. With Kirk Cousins set to start if you have Mendoza, you better make sure you have Cousins too to avoid not taking full advantage of your roster spots.

Finally, the last reason why you should stock up on quarterbacks is because they are incredible trade pieces. There are going to be players in your league who lack depth at the position. If you have four or five starting quarterbacks on your roster, adding one to a trade might just be the piece that you need to get that trade through.

Play College Fantasy Football

A big mistake that a lot of dynasty fantasy football managers make is that they do not know who they are drafting in rookie drafts after the second round. Third, fourth and even fifth round picks have value and there are a lot of managers who are basically throwing roster spots away by taking players at the top of automated draft boards.

This is certainly one of the tougher skills to master when it comes to a dynasty league, because there are 138 college football teams and around 100 fantasy relevant rookies that come into the NFL each season. Knowing every prospect is basically impossible, but having an idea of how a majority of those players performed in college (or other leagues) before the NFL will give you an advantage in your rookie draft. Let’s take Puka Nacua for example. At BYU, injuries limited Nacua’s production, but it was apparent that when he was on the field, he had NFL-level talent. When Nacua came into the NFL, his dynasty ADP was sitting right around the late third round to the fourth round. Not knowing his name or ever watching him play, many passed on Nacua, but those who did see the potential in Nacua have been rewarded handsomely in recent years.

Like I said, it is tough to know every prospect coming into the NFL, but one thing that helps is to find a group of people to play college football fantasy football with. If you like fantasy football, that means that you probably like the NFL. If you like the NFL that probably means you like football. If you like football, that probably means that you can get in to college football. If you are not a huge college football fan, but like football, play college fantasy. You are going to have players on your team that you don’t know, but after spending a season with them, you are going to have an advantage that others in your dynasty league won’t. You will have actually watched the player and know that you need to draft him or stay away from him in your rookie draft.

Get Your Guys

This is my number one tip to playing dynasty fantasy football. Whether it be in a start up draft or in rookie drafts, you need to get players that you like to watch or root for outside of fantasy football. Like I talked about in the intro, in a dynasty league you are not redrafting every year, so you are going to have to live with the players that you build your team around.

Come into what draft you are apart of and build your own draft board. Build it based off of what you value every player at, but make sure that you include your opinion of the player into those rankings. You watch football, you know good football when you see good football. You know who is good and who is bad. You know what players you like watching and what players that you hate watching. Even if it means reaching on a pick, that might be worth it to keep your sanity and avoid rooting for players that you can’t stand in real life. This is as close as you are going to get to being a general manager of a football team. It does not really make a lot of sense to take players that you are not going to have fun with on your team. Make sure that you get the players that you actually want to avoid not having fun in a medium that at its core is incredibly fun.
