In the first round, Furman was able to pull off a big upset over Virginia. With Virginia slowing the pace and limiting possessions, their style contrasted with the Paladins. In the end, Furman’s offense was too much. In a Second Round March Madness game against San Diego, we see a similar contrast of styles, though SDSU does a better job on defense and rebounding than Virginia.
San Diego State had a bit of a scare against Charleston. They turned the ball over too much and weren’t efficient enough from the free throw line. However, their elite defense shows up even on days they miss shots, and it was the reason they are still dancing.
So, the big question in this game is whether or not the Aztecs defense will slow down the Paladins’ offense. I believe the answer is yes. San Diego State should find a bit more offensive success in this game while continuing to place great defense, which will be their ticket to the Sweet 16.
