Astros: Lance McCullers Jr. (4-2, 2.27 ERA)
Phillies: Noah Syndergaard (10-10, 3.94 ERA)

    Houston Astros Preview

After blowing a five-run lead in Game 1, some wondered how the Astros would respond in Game 2. Once again Houston scored early and again built a five-run lead. This time the Astros would not be denied as they held the Phillies to just two runs. Framber Valdez was brilliant, giving up just four hits over 6 1/3 innings of work. The bullpen only gave up two hits throughout the rest of the game and always felt in control.

The hitting was better for Houston although they once again stalled out a bit after they caused some early damage. Houston has to be thrilled that Jose Altuve has his hitting back as he had three hits in Game 2. Although Yordan Alvarez struggled again overall, he was at least able to get on base a few times. This offense isn’t as good as its been in years past but that may not be a problem if the pitching staff can keep the Phillies in check again.

    Philadelphia Phillies Preview

The Phillies offense was thwarted by some great Houston pitching in Game 2. Although some have pointed to possible foreign substance usage by Valdez as a reason the Phillies struggled, the bullpen did a great job of shutting them down too. When an offense can only muster up six hits, they’re almost certain to be in trouble, especially against a team like the Astros.

Zack Wheeler was roughed up early but settled down as the game progressed. While it was too little too late, it’s a good sign for him if he sees the mound again this series. The bullpen did their job as they didn’t allow any additional damage in the final three innings. The pitching staff has struggled with giving up big innings in both games. Outside of those big mistakes, they’ve been solid. If they can simply limit the amount of problem innings they give up, they should be able to be more competitive in Game 3.
