The most lopsided series in the opening round of the 2022 NHL Playoffs comes in the form of Kings vs Oilers. Los Angeles squeaked into the postseason as the last team in and is immediately faced with the daunting task of beating an Edmonton squad who was flat out embarrassed in the playoffs last season. The Oilers franchise and fanbase are starving for playoff success. Despite having high draft picks and multiple Hart Trophy winners, the Oilers have only been past the first round one time since 2006. The Kings will try their best to make that trend continue, but their chances of success are slim to none.

Let’s take a look at the betting odds and season history for the series, and give our Kings vs Oilers NHL Playoffs prediction.

Kings vs Oilers Record | Regular Season History

There is not much to be hopeful for in this Kings vs Oilers NHL Playoffs series if you are a fan of LA. The one glimmer of hope can be gathered from the regular season. As losers in three of four meetings, there is not much to go on except the fact the Kings were able to keep two of their three losses within one goal.

The Oilers typically dominate the regular season, so Kings fans can put a small amount of stock into going to-for-toe with Edmonton.

Kings vs Oilers NHL Playoff Series Keys to Victory

Los Angeles Kings: The Kings are going to have to play a perfect series if they are to survive round one. They have an excess of veteran experience and leadership at all positions and will have to rely on them heavily. In net, Cal Petersen is still young and can be very streaky, while Jonathan Quick is rapidly aging. One of them will have to stand on their head and be the rock for this LA squad. Maybe most importantly, the Kings cannot give the Oilers repeated opportunities on the powerplay, as their penalty kill is among the worst in the NHL, while the Oilers’ powerplay converts on 26% of its chances.

Edmonton Oilers: Confidence, aggression and anger will carry the Oilers through this series. They have so much to prove, and getting to face the Kings is the perfect opportunity for an onslaught. Offense should come with relative ease in this series. The concern now, and moving forward, is what type of play the Oilers are going to get from their goaltenders. The position has been a glaring weak spot all season and will be the Oilers’ demise against better opponents. They need to do all the little things right and win this series with authority.
