Week 2 is here. While there is still a lot of mystery in the air, we have somewhat of a better idea of how teams are going to look this year. That means when picking a team in your NFL Survivor Pool, there are a few matchups that we can exploit for our benefit. If you are unaware of what NFL Survivor picks are, the basic concept is that you make NFL picks throughout the season, but you can only pick a team once. Once you lose, you’re knocked out, so choose your Week 2 NFL Survivor Pool picks wisely.
If you are new to reading my survivor articles, what I do is outline my “lock of the week,” my “value of the week,” and my “high-risk, high-reward pick of the week.”
The “lock” details what team I think has the best chance of winning their matchup. This will most likely be a good team that plays a bad team. The lock is also the official pick for NFL Survivor Pools, meaning we will not reuse a “lock.” My value pick details a mid-tier team that has a good matchup. And finally, my high-risk, high-reward pick details a bad team that has a good matchup. It may be worth it to look at the NFL betting odds for these games and place some bets as well.

San Francisco 49ers vs Miami Dolphins
The San Francisco 49ers come into Week 2 as the overall highest spread, being favored by 13.5 points over the Miami Dolphins. And for good reason. The Rams are many people’s Super Bowl pick, and San Francisco flat-out dominated them in Australia. Now, many people will point to the Rams’ loss as saying it is because they were across the world, but so was San Francisco. I am willing to ride the momentum that San Francisco carries into Week 2 here.
San Francisco’s defense looked like one of the better units in the NFL, holding the dynamic Rams offense to just 290 yards and seven points. Now, they take on the Miami Dolphins, who struggled heavily against a poor Las Vegas Raiders team. It appears that the way to keep the Dolphins’ offense at bay is to contain DeVon Achane. With Nick Bosa, Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw, the 49ers have the players in place to contain the speed of Achane.
On offense, San Francisco’s run game looks like one of the better in the NFL. Between Christian McCaffrey and Kaelon Black, the 49ers have a two-headed monster in the backfield. Once that run game gets going, that will open up the passing game for Mike Evans and George Kittle. This is a game where the 49ers’ star players just outclass the Dolphins’ roster, so don’t overthink it.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Cleveland Browns
After dropping their Week 1 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers get their chance at revenge on the AFC North with a game against the Cleveland Browns. The Bucs come in as 8.5-point favorites over a pretty bad Browns team. While the Buccaneers seem to be on the downhill in terms of where they are going as a franchise, this is a great opportunity to pick up a feel-good victory.
A once-feared Browns defense now looks like one of the worst units in the NFL without Myles Garrett. Trevor Lawrence just lit up the Browns for 245 yards and four touchdowns. Looking at the Tampa Bay offense, the assortment of skill players like Bucky Irving, Emeka Egbuka, Chris Godwin and Cade Otton, they certainly have the firepower for Baker Mayfield to put up a similar stat line to what we saw Lawrence do last week. While the pass game is at the forefront, Tampa’s run game looks improved this season as well, with a solid offensive line and a duo of Irving and Kenny Gainwell.
The Browns’ offense is also nothing that you are scared of. Deshaun Watson is a shell of his former self. Containing Quinshon Judkins is the key to holding this Browns offense, again, something that we saw the Jaguars succeeding at last week. Similar to my lock of the week, the Buccaneers are just an overall better team than the Browns, making this an easy pick.
The Buccaneers look to be one of the safest NFL Survivor Pool picks of Week 2.

Green Bay Packers vs. New York Jets
This might be a little bit of a cop out, because, in reality, the Packers are a better team than what I normally use for my high-risk, high-reward pick, but seeing what they looked like last week, it fits here. Green Bay comes into the weekend as 3.5-point favorites over the New York Jets. The noise continues to grow around Matt LaFleur and the Packers, as they have not won a game since early December last year. While in reality it is not a must-win, Green Bay really needs a win to get the wheels back on the track and exercise some demons.
The obvious issue with Green Bay last week was their inability to handle the non-stop blitz from Brian Flores’ defense. The New York Jets defense is not nearly as strong as Minnesota’s, so the thought is that Jordan Love and the makeshift run game will be able to get into a stronger rhythm. The pass game in particular will fare much better as the Jets’ secondary does not do anything that scares you, especially with Minka Fitzpatrick injured. While the Jets were able to handle the Titans last week, the offense did not do much to inspire hope here.
Again, this feels like it is a must-win game. While the players are a closer match on paper, if Green Bay has any view of being a contender this season, they have to win this game.
