Indiana was already a part of the NCAA Tournament First Four as a result of being seen as one of the “Last Four Teams In”. IU took care of a reeling Wyoming team that lost the game as much or more so than the Hoosiers actually won it. Nonetheless, Mike Woodson has his alma mater in the main bracket in his first year at the helm. However, a two-day turnaround with a long flight from Dayton to Portland in between is far from the ideal scheduling situation.
Where Indiana will have a distinct advantage over West Coast Conference representative Saint Mary’s is in terms of depth. In total, ten different Hoosiers averaged at least 10 minutes per game over the course of the full season. IU’s depth played a key role in the First Four matchup against a Wyoming team that largely only utilizes a six-man rotation. While leading scorer Trayce Jackson-Davis went off for 29 points and nine rebounds, Indiana also got quality minutes and 15 points from Jordan Geronimo among other reserves.
Unfortunately for Indiana, this Saint Mary’s team is completely legit. The Gaels are a senior-laden team and are a force to be reckoned with defensively. KenPom lists Randy Bennett’s squad as a top-10 defensive team that also plays at one of the 25 slowest tempos in all of college basketball. In Matthias Tass, Saint Mary’s has a sound big man to counteract the Hoosiers’ size in the frontcourt. With Tommy Kuhse providing a calming presence at point guard, look for the Gaels to dissect IU thoroughly in this one.
