Providence had a historic season by winning the Big East regular-season title for the first time in school history. Ed Cooley’s bunch parlayed this into a 4-seed in the NCAA Tournament bracket. The problem is, advanced stats and numbers suggest that the Friars are drastically overseeded. No team in college basketball had more luck this season than Providence. According to KenPom, the Friars’ Luck Rating on the year was +.194. For comparison’s sake, the second luckiest team (Samford) only had a +.162 Luck Rating. Furthermore, only six teams in all of Division I had a Luck Rating of +.130 or higher.
Now, the Friars must contend with a South Dakota State squad that has not lost a single game since December 15th! The Jackrabbits capped off a perfect Summit League season by winning the conference tournament. SDSU ranks 12th in the country in offensive efficiency averaging 112.8 points per 100 possessions.
What’s behind SDSU’s offensive efficiency you ask? Well, the Jacks led all of D-I in three-point shooting with a team percentage of 44.93% from beyond the arc. Baylor Scheierman and Douglas Wilson are two players more than capable of creating their own shot. In turn, South Dakota State is capable of covering the spread against Providence and then some.
