In one of the many surprises from the Wild Card round, the Philadelphia Phillies bounced the St. Louis Cardinals from the MLB Playoffs. Philadelphia Phillies Preview
While the Phillies were arguably the coldest team coming into the NLDS MLB Playoffs, they swept the St. Louis Cardinals to get here and looked good doing it. The bats were pretty quiet in the Wild Card round, producing just two runs in 17 innings outside of the ninth inning of Game 1.
Interestingly enough, it has been the pitching that was the strength of Philadelphia. The Cardinals were no offensive powerhouse but to hold any playoff team to just three runs over two games on the road is impressive. It will be interesting to see how the Phillies handle their pitchers this series with Ranger Suarez starting Game 1 due to Aaron Nola and Zach Wheeler having pitched in the Wild Card round. If they fall behind early in this series, their aces may not be enough to bring this team back.
Atlanta Braves Preview
After a late-season sweep of the New York Mets, the Atlanta Braves stole the NL East division crown and bought themselves an automatic spot in the National League Division Series. Atlanta has simply been on another level lately and is clearly one of the true contenders on paper.
Quite simply, there are no holes in this Atlanta Braves team. Offensively they are loaded from top to bottom. Fielding is not an issue and their pitching staff is one of the best in baseball. Kenley Jansen might have an ERA of 3.38 but he still amassed 41 saves this season. The only thing that could possibly stand in the Braves’ way is rust. Atlanta hasn’t played in just under a week which may pose a problem. Game 1 should be a good indicator of how the break has treated the Braves.
