    Philadelphia Phillies Preview

Once again the Phillies’ hitting was nowhere to be found. While the spectacular Astros defense was part of the issue for them, they simply didn’t do enough offensively to deserve the win. The Phillies could only register six total hits. The top five batters in their lineup combined to hit just 2-18 (.111). Philadelphia is always a threat to hit home runs, but it’s clear they can’t be relied on to hit enough to get the job done each game.

The Phillies only gave up three runs but they were lucky it wasn’t a lot more. The Astros scored a run by the fourth pitch of the game. In the eighth inning, they also allowed the first two runners to get on base in a one-run game. The pitching staff kept them in check outside of that, but against a team as good as Houston, they can’t afford to spot them baserunners to start innings.

    Houston Astros Preview

One of the biggest takeaways from Game 5 was just how good the Astros’ defense can be. Great defensive plays from Trey Mancini and Chas McCormick likely saved multiple runs both in the eighth and ninth innings. When combined with a bullpen that gave up just two hits over the final three innings, it’s going to be very hard for any team to beat them, much less a Phillies team struggling to get their offense going.

Even though they got the win, it still feels like we haven’t seen the best the Astros have to offer offensively. In previous postseason games, it was the top of the order that struggled with Yordan Alvarez picking up most of the slack. In Game 5, Jose Altuve and Jeremy Pena combined for five hits while the rest of the team combined for four. The inconsistent offense is making it tough for them to pull away which is dangerous with how quickly Philadelphia’s offense can catch fire.
