NFL Playoff Picture | NFC Playoff Standings
The NFC Playoff Picture has a bunch of moving parts, with several teams still legitimately in the mix to make the postseason. While the route to the playoffs is through winning the division for some teams, the Detroit Lions are a team that can make the playoffs through the Wild Card or by winning the division.
Atop the NFC is the Los Angeles Rams, at 11-3. However, things get crazier from there. The Chicago Bears are second, at 10-4, while the Green Bay Packers are 9-4-1. They play each other this week, and this will have major playoff implications. At a comfortable third seed, the Philadelphia Eagles are 9-5 and have a big lead in the NFC East. The fourth seed, however, is fully up in the air. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers currently have it (7-7), but the Carolina Panthers have the same record and are hoping to steal the NFC South.
The other two NFC Wild Card teams come from the NFC West. The Seattle Seahawks have no worries, sitting at 11-3. The San Francisco 49ers have a 10-4 record, and they would clinch a playoff berth with another win.
Let’s take a look at the NFC Playoff picture. Remember, the top seven teams in the AFC Playoff standings are in, and winning the division rewards the team with a top-four seed.

Lions Playoffs Chances | Lions Playoff Scenarios
The Detroit Lions’ playoff chances are on life support right now, and that’s because they need to win the rest of their games and get a bunch of help in order to make the postseason. Before Week 16 kicks off, The Athletic NFL Playoff Simulator gives the Lions a 27% chance to make the playoffs, given their 8-6 record and the tiebreakers they possess (or don’t). The ESPN Power Index views the Lions’ odds to make the playoffs a bit more favorably, at 36%.
Detroit has a chance to make the playoffs by winning a Wild Card spot. However, the most likely Lions playoff scenario is to win the NFC North. To do this, the Lions must win all three of their games while both the Packers and Bears lose at least two games. If the Lions lose in Week 16 or 17, then the Packers and Bears must lose all three games.
Simply, Detroit is hoping its Week 18 matchup against the Chicago Bears has some stakes. But before then, they must take care of the Steelers this week. Since the Packers and Bears play each other, one of them will add a loss as well.
Detroit Lions Remaining Schedule | Can the Lions Make the Playoffs?
Can the Lions make the playoffs? Yes, they definitely can, but they will need a lot of help! Of the three NFC North teams fighting for a playoff spot, the Lions have the easiest schedule, but they are also in the deepest hole.
This week, Detroit has a non-divisional matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Lions have been defeated by Aaron Rodgers in heartbreaking fashion too often, so they hope it does not happen again. After that, the Lions will end the season with road matchups against the Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Bears.
While Detroit could get a Wild Card spot, it would be tough to make the playoffs this week. Their schedule does give them a chance to win the division in the final week, however. You can bet on the Lions’ playoff odds in either direction ahead of this weekend’s matchup.
