Don’t look now, but the tight end position is taking over. Per our Opportunity Index, Trey McBride is tied for the second-most targets in the NFL, while Dalton Schultz is tied for the fourth-most. The position has been featured early this season, and with the number of backup quarterbacks already taking snaps, tight ends should continue to be heavily targeted.
So, it’s easy to find value at tight end. But if you had a tight end who struggled, well, you may have some tough fantasy football start ’em, sit ’em questions to ask. Luckily, I’m here to help.
Look, I am not here to tell you that Trey McBride or Tyler Warren are worthy of starts. Hell, we’ll leave that type of analysis to the Fantasy Football Counselor or some other hack. Instead, we will look at the players who potentially may or may not be a TE1, depending on their weekly matchup.
Now, labeling a player as a “sit” does not mean they are a must-sit player. As always, check out our weekly fantasy football rankings here. You can also become a member to join a group chat with Zach Brunner and other members where all fantasy football start ’em, sit ’em questions are welcome!

Fantasy Football Start ’em, Sit ’em: Week 3 TEs
Start: Dalton Schultz Fantasy Outlook at Colts
As mentioned on the livestream last week, Dalton Schultz gets peppered with targets when Nico Collins is out. Clearly, that came to fruition, catching 12-of-14 targets for 140 yards. It’s incredibly rare to see someone finish as the TE1 without scoring a touchdown, but that’s exactly what Schultz was able to do.
Nico Collins remains out of practice on Wednesday, so he is trending towards missing another week. With him out, Dalton Schultz is a clear “start” in our Week 3 Fantasy Football Start ’em, Sit ’em.
The Indianapolis Colts have allowed the fifth-most fantasy points to tight ends this season. Travis Kelce totaled 101 yards and a touchdown last week, while Mark Andrews totaled four receptions for 49 yards in Week 1. Schultz has totaled 50+ yards in three straight games against the Colts, and with an increased target share this week, he has top-five potential again.
Start: Oronde Gadsden Fantasy Outlook at Bills
Have we seen a tight end rise the depth chart as quickly as Oronde Gadsden? Last week, the Los Angeles Chargers suffered injuries to both David Njoku and Charlie Kolar, placing both players on IR. So, Gadsden goes from TE3 to TE1 in a hurry, and he sees a positive matchup.
The Buffalo Bills have not been great against tight ends this season, like they were a season ago. In Week 1, Dalton Schultz was peppered with targets (8). Week 2 saw Sam LaPorta total six receptions for 52 yards and a touchdown.
The 0-2 Chargers are expected to be playing from behind while also facing a defense that has allowed over 30 points in both games. It would not be surprising to see this turn into a shootout. If it does, Oronde Gadsden should be involved in stretching the field, and he has high touchdown upside if the Chargers find themselves in the red zone often.
Sit: Colston Loveland Fantasy Outlook vs Eagles
At this point, you have to sit Colston Loveland until he turns in a solid performance. So far, he has just one catch for three yards this season. To make matters worse, he faces the Philadelphia Eagles this week.
There is no doubt that the opponents have inflated their stats, but the Eagles still rank as the toughest defense against fantasy football tight end, allowing just 5.1 fantasy points per game. We don’t know who Loveland will have throwing him the ball. Caleb Williams is likely out, while Tyson Bagent is currently concussed.
We have seen inexperienced quarterbacks lock onto tight ends, so it’s possible either Bagent or Case Keenum locks onto Loveland. Still, he’s impossible to trust right now, and a tough matchup doesn’t make it better.
Sit: Jake Ferguson Fantasy Outlook vs Ravens (in Brazil)
Through two weeks, it is clear that Jake Ferguson is extremely touchdown-dependent. He has six total targets and two touchdowns, with three targets coming in the red zone. This means Dak Prescott has looked Ferguson’s way just three times in the other 80 yards of the field. This is not a recipe for consistent success, and he doesn’t look to be a good play against the Baltimore Ravens.
Despite facing two solid tight ends in Tyler Warren and Juwan Johnson, the Ravens have allowed the 17th-most fantasy points to the position. They were a top-10 defense against fantasy tight ends last season, and it looks like they will perform similarly this season.
The fact of the matter is that Jake Ferguson is not involved enough when both CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens are both healthy. While Ferguson will have random weeks with touchdowns, when he doesn’t score, he could be the reason you lose a fantasy matchup.
