Injuries are stacking up at the quarterback position. If you are one of the victims of this, or if you drafted a player like Justin Herbert or Baker Mayfield who has struggled, then you no doubt are starting down some tough Week 3 QB Fantasy Football Start ’em, Sit ’em decisions. Luckily, I’m here to help!
Now, let’s establish some boundaries here. I am not here to say Lamar Jackson is a “start” this week. We’ll leave that groundbreaking analysis to the AI slop creators. Instead, I will be discussing those who are worthy of a conversation and who may be on the fringe of being a QB1 this week.
Now, labeling a player as a “sit” does not mean they are a must-sit player. As always, check out our weekly fantasy football rankings here. You can also become a member to join a group chat with Zach Brunner and other members where all fantasy football start ’em, sit ’em questions are welcome!

Fantasy Football Start ’em, Sit ’em: Week 3 QBs
Start: Geno Smith Fantasy Outlook at Lions
I was very bullish on Geno Smith and the New York Jets offense coming into this season, and I am happy to see them show up to start the season. Honestly, Geno Smith has looked good. If we can get more touchdowns through the air (one through two weeks), then he will rank highly. Luckily, the Jets face off against the Detroit Lions this week.
This Detroit defense is bad, and it is made worse by the season-ending injury to Avonte Maddox. The Lions surrendered 410 passing yards and 25 fantasy points to Tyler Shough before Josh Allen’s 41-point explosion last week. Both teams will move the ball in this game, and Geno Smith has the receiving options to make him a start-worthy quarterback in Week 3. The matchup’s 47.5-point projected total is one of the highest of the week, and it looks like a fantastic game to stack in daily fantasy as well.
Who would’ve thought Geno Smith would feature in our Fantasy Football Start ’em, Sit ’em in 2026?
Start: Justin Herbert Fantasy Outlook at Bills
If you are a Justin Herbert fantasy owner, you should rightfully be panicking. He and the Los Angeles Chargers’ offense have not been good, with him ranking as QB22 and QB24 the first two weeks. I am hesitantly saying that he should be started this week. And by the way, feel free to trade any Chargers who do have a good week, as their schedule ahead is a nightmare (@SEA, vs DEN, @KC, bye week, @LAR, vs HOU and @BAL).
For as good as the Bills have looked, their defense isn’t the one winning them games. They have allowed over 30 points both weeks while also surrendering 601 passing yards and six touchdowns. They have also allowed a 68% completion rate.
We know Buffalo’s offense will be good, so it is a positive game script for Justin Herbert and the passing offense this week. I get your hesitancy, but you can roll with Herbert for one more week with a bit of confidence.
Sit: Bo Nix Fantasy Outlook vs Rams
Currently, over 27% of ESPN fantasy leagues are starting Bo Nix, and that is too damn high. While he is at home, Nix will face off against a Los Angeles Rams defense that came to life last week against the New York Giants. The Rams shut down the running game, forcing the Giants to beat them through the air.
The Broncos are dealing with health issues in their backfield. Both JK Dobbins and RJ Harvey have hamstring injuries while rookie Jonah Coleman has a sprained ankle. Given the injuries and the opponent, it will be tough for Denver to run the ball in Week 3, putting all of the pressure on Bo Nix and the passing game. I don’t think he and the passing offense are good enough to thrive in that scenario. Nix was QB18 last week, and he may struggle to rank that high this week as well.
Sit: Baker Mayfield Fantasy Outlook vs Vikings
Last week was a perfect opportunity for Baker Mayfield to bounce back and prove he deserved his new contract. He could have gotten revenge over his former team, since he played at home and the Cleveland Browns aren’t good. In the end, he played poorly and ranked as QB21, leading to him being an emphatic “sit” in our Week 3 Fantasy Football Start ’em, Sit ’em.
This week, Mayfield will face a Minnesota Vikings defense that is playing terrific football. They are a blitz-heavy group that will force quarterbacks to make quick decisions. The receiving corps of Tampa has not given us confidence that they can create space off the line of scrimmage to give Mayfield a clear window to throw to. As of now, Baker Mayfield has to put up a good performance before we can think about starting him again.
