The Blues trailed the 3-seed Minnesota Wild by 12 points in the final West Division standings. Such a discrepancy was clearly visible in Game 1 of their NHL Playoffs series against the Presidents’ Trophy-winning Avalanche. The 4-1 defeat certainly cannot be blamed on goalie Jordan Binnington. He did all he could, stopping 46 of 49 shots on goal for a .939 save percentage. Unfortunately, the Blues could only muster 23 shots on goal of their own at the other end. Binnington may have to be as close to perfect as it gets if St. Louis is to make a series out of this.

Game 1 was a virtual walk in the park for the uber-talented Avalanche. The stars were out in full force as Nathan MacKinnon (two goals, one assist) and Gabriel Landeskog (one goal, two assists) each tallied three points. Mikko Rantanen also got in on the act with a pair of assists. That kind of talent is what propelled Colorado to the best record in the NHL betting regular-season. Philip Grubauer stopped all but one of the shots he faced in Game 1. So long as he holds his own in net, the Avs could very well be recognized as Stanley Cup champs in about a month’s time.
