This year’s SDSU basketball team plays a similar brand of basketball to the one that reached the Final Four last season. They are physical, rebound well, get most of their points inside the arc, and play great defense. This year, however, they are led by forward Jaedon Ledee, rather than the backcourt that did much of the scoring last season. Ledee averages over 21 points and eight rebounds. He also was just named a Third-Team All-American.
In the last month of the regular season, UAB suffered a Quad-4 loss at Rice, a Quad-3 home loss to Wichita State, and allowed 106 points to a mediocre Memphis team. Then, they found their stride in the AAC Tournament, winning all three of their games by double digits. The Blazers score the ball at a fairly efficient rate with four players averaging over 10. Interestingly, they are one of the best offensive and worst defensive rebounding teams in the nation.
When I look at this game, I see the Aztecs being able to neutralize UAB’s offensive rebounding, while punishing them on the glass on the other end. San Diego State will be too physical, strong, solid defensively, and UAB will have no answer for Ledee.
