Every year, the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee seems to get away with putting an undeserving team in the bracket. Not only did the committee elect to include Michigan in this year’s field, but they allowed the Wolverines to bypass the First Four as well. In an eerily similar resemblance to Syracuse teams of years gone by, Michigan has parlayed their fortunate at-large bid into a Sweet 16 appearance.
With that being said, Villanova will easily provide the Wolverines with their toughest test to date. From a coaching standpoint, Jay Wright is a mismatch for almost anyone. Juwan Howard figures to be no exception. Having won two of the last five editions of the NCAA Tournament, the Wildcats have been one of the most successful programs in the country in recent years. Led by two experienced and extremely talented guards in Collin Gillespie and Justin Moore, the Big East Tournament champs are more than capable of another Final Four appearance.
One area in which Michigan does figure to have a personnel advantage is in the frontcourt. Hunter Dickinson and Moussa Diabate present a difficult size matchup for a guard-dominated Wildcats team. Knowing that the Wolverines’ edge comes in the post, having this Sweet 16 matchup play out as a half-court slugfest would be ideal.
While Michigan figures to have no qualms about slowing things down based on the matchup, Villanova has been one of the 15 slowest teams on average this season. Despite the high level of offensive execution on both sides, the anticipated tempo suggests that betting the total under is the way to go.
