It was a tale of two halves for both of these teams in the First Round.
For Memphis, their first half showcased how good they can be when they are playing well. The second half showed why this team can’t win a National Championship despite having the talent to do so. The Tigers turned the ball over, missed free throws and got out-hustled. Luckily for them, it was too little too late for Boise State.
Gonzaga went ice cold in their first half, missing 12 shots in a row. They were also uncharacteristically bad from the free throw line, shooting just 9-19. However, Gonzaga stuck with it and blew the game open in the second half. Their mismatch in the post was too much to handle.
Georgia State was able to minimize mistakes, play with a high effort and attack the glass. This is the opposite of Memphis, as their issue all season long was shooting themselves in the foot. You can’t make mistakes against Gonzaga and expect to win.
So, while Memphis has the talent, size and athleticism to compete early in this game, look for Gonzaga to pull away late, similar to the First Round. However, between the defense by both teams and the wasted possessions by Memphis, the UNDER is the best bet.
