The 2019 season kickoff game between the Packers and Bears begins a new era in Titletown USA. Matt LaFleur takes over as the 15th head coach of the Green Bay Packers, Aaron Rodgers is back the helm of a new offense and excitement is in the air about the possibility of an elite defense.
Below is a week by week prediction for the 2019 Packers season, followed by a prediction of the end of season awards for the team.
Season Predictions
Week 1: Thu, Sep 5 at Chicago – W (1-0) Green Bay’s new defense will keep them in the game long enough for the offense to shake off any rust and win in a relatively low scoring game.
Week 2: Sun, Sep 15 Minnesota – L (1-1) Coming off a win in Week 1, the Packers offense may still be showing some growing pains, but unlike the Bears, Minnesota has a few more weapons that may cause difficulties for Green Bay.
Week 3: Sun, Sep 22 Denver 1:00 PM – W (2-1) Denver’s once elite defense has faded a bit over the years and the Broncos offense will be nowhere near enough for the Packers.
Week 4: Thu, Sep 26 Philadelphia 8:20 PM – L (2-2) Despite hosting the Eagles on a short week, Philadelphia still is a force to be reckoned with in the NFC and may simply be too much for Green Bay.
Week 5: Sun, Oct 6 at Dallas 4:25 PM – W (3-2) Aaron Rodgers has managed to have the Cowboys number over the last few years and 2019 is not the year that changes. The offense will find its rhythm and down the Cowboys.
Week 6: Mon, Oct 14 Detroit 8:15 PM – W (4-2) Hosting the Lions on Monday Night Football, Green Bay scores a win in back-to-back weeks for the first time, outclassing its division foe at Lambeau.
Week 7: Sun, Oct 20 Oakland 1:00 PM – W (5-2) Three straight wins, as Green Bay continues to ride the momentum under LaFleur’s innovative new system. A slow start in the game, possibly due to a bit of looking ahead to next week’s opponent, is erased for a big win ahead of the prime time showdown in KC.
Week 8: Sun, Oct 27 at Kansas City 8:20 PM – L (5-3) A game that promises to have plenty of fireworks, Kansas City may simply have a bit too much speed for Green Bay.
Week 9: Sun, Nov 3 at L.A. Chargers 4:25 PM – W (6-3) The third straight week against an AFC West opponent results in a win for the Pack.
Week 10: Sun, Nov 10 Carolina 1:00 PM – L (6-4) A team one week away from a much needed bye week suffers a loss to the Panthers that may be the result of mental errors and fatigue
Week 11: Bye
Week 12: Sun, Nov 24 at San Francisco 4:25 PM – W (7-4) A small letdown before the bye week is avenged after a week off, as Green Bay looks to make a push to playoff contention.
Week 13: Sun, Dec 1 at NY Giants 1:00 PM – W (8-4) Whether its Eli Manning or Daniel Jones at quarterback, it probably won’t matter as the Packers should be the better team in this one.
Week 14: Sun, Dec 8 Washington 1:00 PM – W (9-4) Pretty much the same story from last week, a team without any clear picture at quarterback should result in a win for the Green and Gold.
Week 15: Sun, Dec 15 Chicago 1:00 PM – L (9-5) Chicago looks to avenge the Week 1 loss and knocks off Green Bay as it makes its own push to NFC North supremacy. Weather limits the aerial attack and Chicago’s defense proves to be just a little too much.
Week 16: Mon, Dec 23 at Minnesota 8:15 PM – W (10-5) The Packers avenge its early season loss to the Vikings, with the offense clicking on all cylinders. The Packers win its first game at US Bank Stadium in a big game that seals a spot in the playoffs.
Week 17: Sun, Dec 29 at Detroit 1:00 PM – W (11-5) Back to back weeks inside allows Green Bay’s offense to keep clicking, building momentum to the playoffs.
Playoffs: Elimination in NFC Divisional Weekend- As a three or four seed, Green Bay wins Wild Card weekend at Lambeau before traveling to one of the top seeds and not having the experience to make a very deep run.
Team Awards
MVP: Aaron Rodgers – This is simple. Green Bay goes as far as 12 goes and Aaron leads the young squad to the playoffs.
Offensive Player of the Year: Aaron Jones – A run first coach and a dynamic home run threat that can score any time he touches that ball (either out of the backfield or as a receiver) finally hits his groove that Mike McCarthy refused to unleash.
Defensive Player of the Year: Za’Darius Smith – The newcomer is the heart and soul of the new identity defense for the Packers. Smith signed the big deal in the offseason and rewards the team with a career year. Corner Jaire Alexander is a close runner up, but Smith’s leadership gives him a slight edge.
Most Improved: Jake Kumerow – Kumerow has shown flashes of being a big time player in the preseason last year before an injury landed him on the IR. Kumerow came back this year and continued to make plays and earn the trust of Rodgers. Fellow receivers Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Trevor Davis may make a run at this spot, but Kumerow gets the nod in this award list. If cornerback Kevin King can remain healthy for a full season, he too could receive consideration.
Rookie of the Year: Darnell Savage – Savage may be overshadowed by fellow first-round pick Rashan Gary in terms of early attention in this year’s rookie class, but it’ll be Savage who has the biggest impact as a ball hawk safety.
Moment of the Year: The Monday Night game in Minnesota on December 23rd may make or break the team’s playoff push and, with a win, could give Green Bay the big push to make a run at the postseason.
