The NASCAR San Diego race weekend at Naval Base Coronado is a unique event in more ways than one. As far as qualifying results specifically are concerned, this marks the first time since Wisconsin’s Road America was removed from the schedule that lap times are well above the two-minute threshold. It’s just how things go at a track that is 3.4 miles in length and consists of 16 turns.
With this being a brand new course full of uncertainty, once could argue that starting position carries even more weight than a typical road course race this weekend. The NASCAR qualifying results produced various surprises, both to the positive and negative. However, the pole sitter will be no surprise to anyone.
The following shares the official starting grid for Sunday’s race, along with Coronado Street Course track details and key observations from NASCAR Cup Series practice and qualifying.

Official Anduril 250 Starting Lineup
For the sixth time in his NASCAR Cup Series career, Shane van Gisbergen is set to lead the field to the green flag from the pole position. That said, the victory in Saturday’s time trials did not come easily.
SVG bounced off the wall on two separate occasions during his timed lap around the massive street course. Despite flirting with disaster, his time of 134.788 seconds (90.809 mph) was still good enough to top the NASCAR qualifying results.
One need not look beyond the front row for a surprise result. Although he is not known for his road racing skills, Carson Hocevar will join van Gisbergen up front at the start of Sunday’s race. A time of 134.944 seconds (90.704 mph) put him 0.156 seconds off of SVG’s lap.
Ten of the 39 drivers in the NASCAR San Diego race field broke the 90-mph barrier on their best qualifying lap. None of the drivers hit that mark in Friday’s practice session. While the vast majority of the sport’s top road racers will be starting near the front, there will be a few with ground to make up.

NASCAR Anduril 250 Practice and Qualifying Notes
- This is the second pole award of the 2026 season for Shane van Gisbergen. He converted the first into a victory at Watkins Glen.
- Including the Watkins Glen result, SVG has won four of the five previous races in which he started on the pole.
- Points leader Tyler Reddick, one of the top road racers in the field, spun out during qualifying but still managed to finish 17th on time.
- Spire Motorsports had a successful qualifying day with all three cars placing inside the top-10. Carson Hocevar will start second, Daniel Suarez sixth and Michael McDowell ninth.
- Front Row Motorsports also deserves recognition with both Zane Smith and Todd Gilliland set to start inside the top-5.
- Austin Hill finished tenth in the NASCAR qualifying results and will be one of the only drivers in the field with the benefit of added seat time this weekend. After Cup qualifying, Hill went on to win Saturday’s O’Reilly Auto Parts Series race at San Diego.
- Christopher Bell will start the race in 37th, but the broken wrist he suffered in a crash two weeks ago may prevent him from finishing it. Brent Crews will be the driver on standby.
- After struggling at Watkins Glen, Hendrick Motorsports failed to live up to expectations again in the San Diego qualifying. William Byron and Chase Elliott will be mired near the back of the grid.
- Competing in a fourth Trackhouse Racing entry this weekend, former Formula 1 driver Kevin Magnussen qualified 21st.
- Seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson struggled to a 36th-place showing in qualifying.
- Kyle Larson posted the fastest lap in Friday’s practice at 89.612 mph. Todd Gilliland, Ty Gibbs, Connor Zilisch and Carson Hocevar rounded out the top five.
