This weekend, the NASCAR Cup Series returns to a track that produced one of the most memorable moments of the 2021 racing schedule. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course will host the Verizon 200 at The Brickyard this Sunday afternoon.
Last year, a surprise winner took the checkered flag after a wild sequence that saw a broken curb destroy several race cars and lead to a lengthy red flag. A.J. Allmendinger found his way to the lead on the late-race restart and won his second career Cup Series race. Road course aces like “The Dinger” have certainly had this weekend’s Verizon 200 circled on the NASCAR racing schedule.
This year, the NASCAR Cup Series comes to IMS with only five races left on the schedule before the start of the playoffs. Time is running out for drivers below the cutline to try and win or point their way into the playoff field of 16. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course could provide another unpredictable result and perhaps play into the hands of a driver further down in the NASCAR standings.
Speaking of playoffs, the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series begins its seven-race chase for the 2022 season championship this weekend. While the Xfinity Series will join the Cup drivers in racing on the IMS Road Course, the truckers will duke it out under the lights at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park on Friday night.
