New York Yankees Preview
The Yankees found themselves handicapped early in Game 1 when starting pitcher Jameson Taillon could only manage to get through 4 1/3 innings before getting the hook. New York’s bullpen couldn’t do enough to limit the Astros offense and gave up three earned runs in less than three innings immediately after Taillon was pulled.
The Yankees were able to score two runs but only amassed five total hits. Aaron Judge once again was a big reason for the loss as he was 0-4 with a strikeout. The Yankees offense continues to struggle without production from Aaron Judge and Judge doesn’t look to be coming out of his slump any time soon. If the Yankees want to even this series up, they need some of the other big bats like Gleyber Torres and Josh Donaldson to come through. If none of those three can step up, the Yankees will have a hard time competing with the Astros.
Houston Astros Preview
Justin Verlander has had some incredible postseason performances in his career. His Game 1 performance is right up there with the rest of them. Verlander pitched six innings, striking out 11 while giving up just three hits and one earned run. The bullpen did give up a home run thanks to an Anthony Rizzo solo home run, but that was more than enough to secure the victory.
The bats were good enough in Game 1 although relying so heavily on home runs is not great moving forward. Five of the seven hits for Houston came from the bats of Jeremy Pena and Chas McCormick. It was a good victory but Houston will hope to get more production from Jose Altuve, Alex Bregman and Yordan Alvarez moving forward in this series.
