Taking a look at the best Week 4 NFL Survivor Pool Picks, including the Detroit Lions.
If you are unaware of what NFL Survivor picks are, the basic concept is you make NFL picks throughout the season, but you can only pick a team once. Once you lose, you’re knocked out, so choose your Week 4 NFL Survivor Pool picks wisely.
If you are new to reading my survivor articles, what I do is outline my “lock of the week,” my “value of the week,” and my “high-risk, high-reward pick of the week.”
The “lock” details what team I think has the best chance of winning their matchup. This will most likely be a good team that plays a bad team. The lock is also the official pick for NFL Survivor Pools, meaning we will not reuse a “lock.” My value pick details a mid-tier team that has a good matchup. And finally, my high-risk, high-reward pick details a bad team that has a good matchup. It may be worth it to look at the NFL betting odds for these games and place some bets as well.
Teams Used for Lock of the Week:
- Cincinnati Bengals
- San Francisco 49ers
- Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Detroit Lions vs Cleveland Browns
The Detroit Lions enter Week 4 as 9.5-point favorites over the Cleveland Browns. Since the Week 1 catastrophe against the Packers, the Lions look like the team of the past two years. While the offense still looks like one of the best in the NFL, the defense really showed out against the Baltimore Ravens last week, totaling seven sacks. While the Browns don’t have as potent an offense as the Ravens, the key to the Lions’ victory in this one is continuing to put the pressure on opposing quarterbacks. Green Bay was able to rattle Joe Flacco last week to the point that the hometown fans were booing him. If the Lions can use what the Packers showed and send pressure Flacco’s way, Cleveland’s run game is not strong enough to keep off with Detroit’s offense.
In my mind, this is one of two games where the two teams are so unevenly matched that you have to take one. The other being the Buffalo Bills, but we are saving the Bills for the future, especially in the weak AFC East. While the Browns are coming off a miracle win against Green Bay, that momentum stops here. Detroit has a better offense than Green Bay and should not see as many problems against that strong defense. Amon-Ra St. Brown will be able to work underneath against Cleveland’s young linebacking core, while a mix of Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery will be able to combat the Browns’ front seven.

Denver Broncos vs Cincinnati Bengals
After starting the season with a win over the Tennessee Titans, the Broncos are looking to get back into the win column with a matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals. They open the week as 7.5-point favorites. Much of that has to do with Jake Browning starting for the Bengals. To say the Week 3 matchup against the Vikings was bad is an understatement. Now, he goes from one great defense to the next with Denver. The Broncos’ defense is no joke. While Ja’Marr Chase is as good as any in the league, he gets Pat Surtain this week, who continues to play as the best corner in the league. With Surtain taking Chase away, Denver can spend a resource or two on stopping Tee Higgins.
On the defensive side of the ball, there is nothing that really scares you too much outside of Trey Hendrickson. With that being said, the Broncos have one of the better offensive lines in the NFL. The Broncos will be able to run the ball in this game. With JK Dobbins moving strongly, Bo Nix will be able to shake off some of the early-season rust. This is a big game for Courtland Sutton in my mind, as again, the Bengals don’t pose a strong threat on the end. The Bengals are in a tailspin without Joe Burrow, and taking a team playing them is a strong idea to stay alive in your NFL survivor pool.

New York Jets vs Miami Dolphins
As far as high-risk, high-reward matchups go this week, there are not many to choose from, so I am going with maybe a little bit of a shocker here. Even though the Miami Dolphins are favored by 2.5 (probably due to being the home team), I think the Jets come away with a much-needed victory in this one. The question coming into this game is who will start at quarterback for the Jets in this one. As of this writing, Justin Fields is still in concussion protocol, but has an extra day to get healthy with the game taking place on Monday night. I don’t know that it matters who starts for the Jets in this one, as the Dolphins are trotting out one of the worst defenses in the NFL.
If Tyrod Taylor starts in the game, the passing game sees an instant upgrade, while if Justin Fields starts, the running game should see an instant upgrade. Given the Jets’ investments in the offensive line over the past few offseasons, whoever starts at quarterback should be able to go through their reads. As for the defense, the Jets will win this matchup, as Will McDonald continues to progress and Sauce Gardner is still a premier cover corner in the NFL. With Miami looking like a bottom-five team in the NFL this season, the Jets will come away with the upset (?) victory in this one.
