Storm vs Aces WNBA Playoffs Game 2 Betting Preview

Seattle Storm Preview

The 4-seed Storm trailed by one with under two minutes to play in Sunday’s series-opener. That’s when Jewell Lloyd decided to take matters into her own hands. The veteran guard knocked down a deep three-pointer, buried a pair of free throws and added a step-back jumper with 30 seconds remaining to lift the Storm to the WNBA betting upset. Breanna Stewart provided her typical scoring output in the Game 1 win as well with 24 points.

When the WNBA Playoffs bracket was officially locked in, it was clear right away that the Storm would potentially pose a tricky matchup for the Aces should the two teams meet in the Semifinal Round. Lo and behold, this exact scenario has played out, and the lower seed managed to get the better of the championship favorites in Game 1. The tandem of Stewart and midseason pickup Tina Charles gives Seattle a demonstrative advantage in the post. Thus, despite the desperate situation Las Vegas now faces, its impossible to blindly lay the points with tonight’s Storm vs Aces prediction.

Las Vegas Aces Preview

After sustaining their first loss of the postseason, the top-seeded Aces now face a great deal of pressure in Game 2. The last thing that Las Vegas can afford is to fall behind two games to none with Games 3 and 4 set to take place in Seattle. The WNBA betting favorites to win the title entering the playoffs will have to step up on Wednesday night. Unfortunately, the aforementioned size disadvantage in the paint remains a key variable that the Aces must contend with. The continued absence of Dearica Hamby due to a knee injury only makes compounds that issue.

On a more positive note, Aces fans can reasonably expect an uptick in scoring on Wednesday night. Chelsea Gray and Kelsey Plum combined for 41 of the team’s 73 points in Game 1. Meanwhile, A’ja Wilson and Jackie Young finished with only eight and 11 points, respectively. That’s a far cry from what both players averaged during the regular season. Seattle has been a stingy defensive team all year long, but the Aces simply have too much offensive talent to be held down repeatedly.

Storm vs Aces Stats

  • Seattle surrendered 78.4 PPG this season (No. 3 in the WNBA).

  • Las Vegas surrendered 84.1 PPG this season (T-No. 9 in the WNBA).

Storm vs Aces Prediction

The final tally of 149 points that these teams combined for in Game 1 wound up finishing over 20 points below the closing betting total. In reality, it was a brutal shooting display by both sides on Sunday. With regression to the mean expected, a play on the Over in Game 2 is preferred.

In the series-opener, Seattle and Las Vegas shot a virtually identical 41.3% and 41.2% from the field, respectively. Relative to full-season averages, it was a particularly poor display from three-point range. The Storm and Aces both finished tied for the best three-point shooting percentage in the WNBA this season at 36.1%. On Sunday, Seattle shot just 22.7% from distance. The Aces were not much better at 26.1%.

With so much room for positive regression, it seems realistic to expect a much higher scoring output in Wednesday’s contest. For that matter, one could argue that the only way the Aces get back into this series tonight is by doing what they do best: pushing the pace and making it an offensive track meet. The size disadvantage that Las Vegas is facing in the paint without Dearica Hamby means that a run-and-gun style of play is probably the top seed’s best option.

It’s also worth noting that the current WNBA betting odds list the total at 169.5, This is three full points lower than the closing number for Game 1. That’s a rather steep adjustment, especially considering that both teams failed to come anywhere close to matching their usual offensive production on Sunday.

Storm vs Aces Prediction: Over 169.5 (-115 at BetOnline Sportsbook)
