Southern Conference Basketball Breakdown

East Tennessee State is looking to repeat as Southern Conference champion. ETSU had an up and down conference schedule, finishing with a 12-11 conference record. The top three teams in the conference all finished with only five loses, making it tough to judge what teams are better than the others. Early in the season, Furman was ranked as one of the best mid-major programs in America. The Paladins proved this with their NET Rating of +15.7.

The Southern Conference Tournament should be one of the most exciting tournaments due to eight out of the ten teams having a positive NET Rating. Every team in the conference also averages over 70 points per game. This should create shootouts in almost all of the games. The biggest overachiever in relation to the preseason rankings was Wofford, who was projected fifth and finished second. The biggest underachiever in relation to the preseason rankings was Mercer, who was projected fourth and finished seventh. It should be exciting to see who represents the Southern Conference in the NCAA Tournament.
