With No. 11 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, the New York Giants have plenty of options. Many people are calling for them to pick a wide receiver. Here are the reasons for and against WR being the Giants draft position of choice in the first round.

Should the Giants Draft WR at No. 11?

Reasons for Drafting WR

Surrounding Daniel Jones with threats gives him the best chance to succeed. It is that simple. While Kenny Golladay is a legitimate threat, none of the other receivers on the roster has performed to that standard. Darius Slayton has shown flashes, but at times has disappeared. Sterling Shepard has dealt with injuries since he has gotten to the NFL. This inconsistency hasn’t helped Jones in his development. The addition of another receiver could add another layer to this offense.

Based on the assumption that the Giants offense will be built around run pass options (RPO’s), a player like Jaylen Waddle would excel on this team. Waddle led the NCAA in yards after catch (YAC). An offense centered around RPO’s would get the ball to Waddle quickly, then allow him to make plays in space. DeVonta Smith could fit into the scheme as well. His consistent hands would bring a change to the Giants. They have struggled with drops the past few seasons. A receiving corps of Golladay, Slayton, Shepard and either Waddle or Smith could make this one of the best groups in the NFL.

Reasons Against Drafting WR

It is a deep receiver class and the Giants have other spots that can be addressed. It is also no guarantee that taking a receiver in the first will result in them being good. In recent years, many first-round receivers have struggled, while many taken in the second have become some of the best in the league. Receivers like Terrace Marshall or Kadarius Toney could be available at pick No. 42. Both of these receivers have first-round traits, giving them plenty of upside at a cheaper price.
