Red Sox: Eduardo Rodriguez (13-8, 4.74 ERA)

Tampa Bay Rays Preview

After rallying to tie Game 3 late on a home run by Wander Franco, the Rays ultimately were defeated in a 13-inning thriller. Recall the last time that you saw a hit ball go off the wall before bouncing up off the ground and off an outfielder to go over the wall. That’s exactly what happened on Kevin Kiermaier’s hit to right in the top half of the 13th. After consulting with New York, the umpires ruled it a ground-rule double. This ruling prevented Yandy Diaz from scoring on the play. It will certainly go down as one of the most obscure plays in MLB Postseason history.

The real concern facing Rays manager Kevin Cash in Game 4 is how to navigate the pitching. A total of nine pitchers appeared in the marathon Game 3 for Tampa Bay. Coming right back to play the following night won’t be easy. Reliever Collin McHugh will draw the start, putting the Rays’ “opener” strategy on full display in the postseason. McHugh had solid numbers this year but got knocked around by the Red Sox in a Game 2 relief appearance. If he fails to get through a minimum of two or three innings in tonight’s MLB betting matchup, the Rays could be in serious trouble.

Boston Red Sox Preview

After catching the big-time break in the top half of the 13th, catcher Christian Vazquez became the hero for Boston in Game 4. He crushed a two-run walk-off homer in the bottom half of the inning to propel the Red Sox to a series lead. Both Enrique Hernandez and Kyle Schwarber also went yard and had three hits apiece for the Red Sox in last night’s game. After the bullpen blew a two-run lead late, Nick Pivetta starred in relief during the extra innings. He recorded a whopping seven strikeouts over four innings and prevented the Rays from scratching across a single run.

Thanks to the exceptional performance by Pivetta, the Red Sox pitching situation isn’t quite as dicey as Tampa Bay’s ahead of this Game 4 MLB betting matchup. The starter will be Eduardo Rodriguez. A 13-game winner during the regular season, Rodriguez failed to make it out of the second inning in Game 1 of this ALDS. The Rays jumped on him for two early runs. Rodriguez also struggled to locate, walking two batters in his short outing. Alex Cora will hope for a better showing tonight in the friendly confines of Fenway Park.
