For two teams that came into the NLCS with incredibly hot offenses, Phillies vs Padres Game 1 was the last thing most fans expected. The Philadelphia Phillies only had three hits. However, two of those were solo home runs. The San Diego Padres could only muster up one hit and will need to get back on track in Game 2 so that they don’t travel to Philadelphia down two games to none.

Philadelphia Phillies Preview
Entering the playoffs, one of their biggest weaknesses was their pitching. In Game 1 of the NLCS however, it was their greatest strength. Zach Wheeler pitched the game of his life and the bullpen did well to finish the Padres off in the eighth and ninth innings. With Aaron Nola on the hill in Game 2, the Phillies are in good hands. Nola has a 2-0 record with an ERA of zero over 12 2/3 innings.
The offense wasn’t great in Game 1 but they still showed how dangerous they are. Philadelphia’s entire lineup is a power threat and they showed it. Although they could only muster three hits, two of them were home runs. Even on nights when the bats aren’t hot, the Phillies can still put up enough runs to hang with the best of them.
San Diego Padres Preview
While it’s not time for the Padres to completely panic, there is plenty of reason to worry. After losing Game 1, the last thing the Padres can do is drop Game 2 as well. Their bullpen was impeccable again even though they only pitched for two innings. With Blake Snell on the hill in Game 2, the bullpen will be called upon much earlier as Snell rarely goes into the sixth inning.
Credit is due to Zach Wheeler for silencing the Padres bat, but it also appeared that the Padres just had an off night. After already losing one game at home, the Padres can’t afford another off night. San Diego has been able to lean on Aaron Nola and Trent Grisham to this point in the playoffs. If those two can’t step up again, the Padres will certainly need others to take their place.
