San Diego Padres Preview
It looked dire for the Padres early on in Game 2. Their defense made multiple mistakes and didn’t help out starter Blake Snell at all. Thanks to a poor outing by Phillies pitcher Aaron Nola, the mistakes didn’t matter in the end. With the series now shifting to Philadelphia, there is even less margin of error for the Padres, they need to clean up their defensive mistakes for Game 3.
The bats came alive in Game 2 and they scored five runs in a huge fifth inning. The Padres would never relinquish the lead again. San Diego had 13 hits and they were able to hit the long ball along with playing “small ball.” Every starter but Trent Grisham had a base hit and with that kind of production, it will be hard for any team to beat San Diego when they’re on.
Philadelphia Phillies Preview
The Phillies have to feel that they let a golden opportunity slip through their fingers. Had they come out on top in Game 2, they could’ve split their next two home games and gone back to San Diego with a 3-1 lead. Instead, this series is still very much alive and the pressure now shifts to the Phillies.
The bats have been good enough through two games for Philadelphia. Seven runs over two games isn’t fantastic, but it has been enough to this point. With Musgrove on the hill in Game 3, it’s important that the Phillies get to him early. With the way the Padres’ bullpen has played so far in the playoffs, they won’t have much offensive success late in games.
