After falling behind four runs in the first inning, it looked like the San Diego Padres would be able to tie the series at two games apiece. Instead the Philadelphia Phillies erupted for 10 runs and took Game 4 to take a 3-1 series lead. With Game 5 also being played in Philadelphia, can the Phillies close the series at home, or will the Padres force a Game 6?

This MLB betting preview for the NLCS MLB Playoffs Padres vs Phillies Game 5 includes game info, starting pitchers, betting odds, trends and a prediction for tonight’s postseason matchup.

    San Diego Padres Preview

After bouncing Phillies starter Bailey Falter from the game in the very first inning, it looked like nothing could stop the Padres. Instead, six Phillies arms came out of the bullpen and held San Diego to just five hits and two runs in the last 8 2/3 innings. For as many runs as their offense put up, Manny Machado’s home run came on a fantastic inside fastball while the other three first quarter runs came with two outs. Simply put, the Padres were lucky to even score six runs this game.

Mike Clevinger had struggled in his previous start this postseason and struggled even more on Saturday night. Clevinger didn’t record a single out and was pulled after just 15 pitches. The bullpen did okay outside of a poor showing from Sean Manea. Manea gave up five runs in just over an inning of work. The bullpen has been used a lot this series and are nowhere near as dominant as they were in previous series. San Diego can no longer trust their bullpen to slam the door on the Phillies this series.

    Philadelphia Phillies Preview

On Saturday night the Phillies showed the resolve of a true champion. Rhys Hoskins had a great bounce back game with two home runs. The bats of Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber and J.T. Realmuto have been huge this series and nobody seems to have an answer for them. With the way the Phillies are seeing the ball, the question becomes if anybody can stop this offense.

Although Bailey Falter’s start could have gone much better, the Phillies got the win at the end of the day. The bullpen was fantastic after a disastrous first inning and they have looked much better than that of the Padres. Coming into this season, the intriguing matchup was the Phillies offense against the Padres bullpen. After just four games however, it appears the Phillies may just have the better pitching staff as well. Sitting one game away from the World Series, do they have enough left to finish the job?
