Pac-12 Conference Breakdown

The Pac-12 basketball tournament has been dominated by Oregon and Arizona in recent years. All told, the two schools have combined to win each of the last five and six of the last seven tournaments. Oregon will look to defend their Pac-12 Tournament title from 2019 as the top seed in this year’s tournament. Meanwhile, Arizona will not participate in this year’s tournament following a self-imposed postseason ban. The only other school to win the Pac-12 Tournament in the last seven editions was UCLA back in 2014.

Seven Pac-12 basketball teams enter the tournament in the top 100 of the College Basketball Net Rankings. 3-seed Colorado is ranked the highest of the bunch at 13. USC (15), Oregon (32), UCLA (41) and Arizona (46) comprise the remainder of the Pac-12 teams ranked in the top 50. The best scoring offense of teams participating in the Pac-12 Tournament belongs to 8-seed Arizona State. The Sun Devils were second to only Arizona in the conference averaging 74.8 points per game. If ASU can shore up things on the defensive end, they have the talent and making of a dark horse contender to win.

Speaking to Arizona State and their potential in the Pac-12 Tournament, the Sun Devils were the conference’s greatest underachiever relative to preseason poll projections. Their status as an 8-seed is a far cry from the second-place finish they were projected. The preseason Pac-12 basketball projections only picked one of the top three finishers correctly. 2-seed USC and 3-seed Colorado both overachieved this year after being picked to finish sixth and seventh. Oregon State was the greatest mover, earning the 5-seed in the Pac-12 Tournament after being picked to finish dead last.
