Big 12 Tournament Championship | College Basketball Betting Overview

Oklahoma State Basketball Outlook

The Big 12 is as deep a league as any in the country, and no team is hotter in the conference right now than Oklahoma State. After pulling off an upset of top-seed Baylor in the Big 12 Tournament semifinals, the Cowboys have now won eight of their last nine games entering Saturday’s championship. To further put OSU’s recent surge into perspective, consider that seven of those victories have come against ranked opponents.

It wasn’t too long ago that Oklahoma State was languishing at the bottom of the Big 12 Conference. Coach Mike Boynton has led a remarkable turnaround of the program since taking over, and the Cowboys now have a chance to punctuate their season with a conference championship. Nothing came easy in a narrow 72-69 quarterfinal win over West Virginia. The Pokes’ 83-74 upset of Baylor in the semifinals was a close game than the final score would suggest. Nonetheless, OSU became just the second team to beat the Bears all season.

Oklahoma State is led by Big 12 Player of the Year Cade Cunningham. The uber-talented freshman showed out in the upset over Baylor with 25 points, eight rebounds and five assists. There’s a reason why he is widely believed to be the eventual top pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. Avery Anderson has emerged as a terrific second option and added 20 points in the win over Baylor.

Texas Basketball Outlook

One could argue that Texas caught a bit of a break on their journey to Saturday’s Big 12 Tournament Final. Due to a positive virus test in the Kansas basketball program. The Longhorns did not have to play in the semifinal round of the tournament. They instead earned a free pass into the title game and have only played once in Kansas City thus far. Needless to say, Texas will enjoy a rest advantage over Oklahoma State on Saturday night.

The Longhorns have won four consecutive games and five of six overall entering Saturday’s tournament final. Shaka Smart’s team has been highly ranked seemingly all season. Texas earned a hard-fought 67-66 win over Texas Tech in the Big 12 Tournament quarterfinals. Saturday’s championship game sets up as a grudge match after Texas split the season-series with Oklahoma State at one game apiece.

Three Texas players were named to All-Big 12 conference teams this season. Guard Andrew Jones received the highest recognition by being named to the Second Team. In addition, Kai Jones took home Big 12 Sixth Man of the Year honors. Matt Coleman led the way in the Longhorns’ quarterfinal win over Texas Tech with 19 points and six assists. Texas also got a 10-point, 11-rebound double-double effort from big man Jericho Sims in the victory.

  • Oklahoma State 2020-21 Betting Trends: 17-9-1 ATS, 18-8-1 to the Over
  • Texas 2020-21 Betting Trends: 11-13-1 ATS, 15-10 to the Over
  • Texas leads the all-time head-to-head series over Oklahoma State 45-38.
  • Each team has won three of the last six head-to-head meetings in the series.
  • Oklahoma State is 8-0 ATS in their last seven games.
  • Texas is 4-0 ATS in their last four games.
  • Texas is just 3-9-1 ATS in their last 13 games as a betting favorite.
  • The total has gone over in six of Oklahoma State’s last seven games.
  • 13 of Texas’ last 18 neutral site games as a favorite have gone under the total.

Oklahoma State vs Texas Stats

  • Oklahoma State is averaging 76.7 points per game (PPG) this season (No. 3 in the Big 12)
  • Oklahoma State is surrendering 72.2 PPG on the season (No. 9 in the Big 12)
  • Texas is averaging 74.6 PPG this season (No. 5 in the Big 12)
  • Texas is surrendering 68.1 PPG (No. 4 in the Big 12)

Oklahoma State vs Texas Prediction

Sorry, but I simply refuse to step in front of Cade Cunningham and the freight train that currently is Oklahoma State. It’s possible that I could successfully draw the charge laying the points with Texas given that the spread is so small. But that’s not a risk I am willing to take. The Baylor team that the Cowboys just beat is a clearcut national championship contender. That’s how hot OSU is right now. I liked the Pokes coming into the Big 12 Tournament at 10-1 and I don’t see any reason to hedge in this championship game matchup.
