Mike Evans Free Agency injury history 49ers

Mike Evans Signs With 49ers, Injury History is Terrifying

The San Francisco 49ers signed Mike Evans in NFL Free Agency, but will his injury history be an issue?

The wide receivers available in NFL Free Agency are overall good, but they are not great. When healthy, there is no doubt that one of the best wide receivers available for 2026 is veteran Mike Evans. He was seen as a player who could be added to get over the hump and compete for a Super Bowl next season. Ultimately, it was the San Francisco 49ers who decided to make the signing, though several teams were interested in his services.

Of course, the main issue with Evans in recent seasons has been his health. The same can be said for the San Francisco 49ers, so is this a match made in heaven, or will this end in disaster?

Mike Evans Free Agency, Signs With 49ers

Few wide receivers in this era of the NFL have more impressive stats than Mike Evans. He began his career with 11 straight 1,000-yard receiving seasons, before injuries limited him to eight games and 368 yards last year. Following the Brandon Aiyuk debacle, the 49ers have been in desperate need of wide receiver talent. The team traded away Deebo Samuel and gave Aiyuk top-10 wide receiver money. Unfortunately for them, Aiyuk decided he no longer wanted to play for the team, sitting out last season.

Despite this, the 49ers were still one of the best teams in the NFL. That is, until their several injuries caught up to them. While Christian McCaffrey managed to have a healthy season, Brock Purdy, Ricky Pearsall, George Kittle, Nick Bosa, Fred Warner and several others were victims of injuries, leading to conspiracies about a nearby electrical substation causing the injuries.

If this conspiracy is actually true, then this may be the worst signing of the day. Mike Evans’ injury history is vast, and he cannot take many more injuries. His hamstring is perpetually hurt, and Evans has also recently missed time because of his collarbone and knee. If he can stay healthy, there is no doubt this is a great signing for this offense under Kyle Shanahan. However, the worries about Evans’ injury history, as well as the 49ers’ injury history, are warranted.

Mike Evans Contract With 49ers

The Mike Evans contract is a bit complex. At its surface, he signed a three-year, $60.4 million deal. However, his contract with the 49ers is not a true three-year contract. Instead, the last year is essentially a “void” year. And, from what we have heard, it sounds like the team could get out after the first season without much trouble.

So, it is more like a 1+1 year contract with a void year at the end for cap purposes.
