The Miami Hurricanes visited Durham, North Carolina where they took on second-ranked Duke. Miami came into the ACC matchup with a 12-3 record, in hopes of continuing their bright season. Duke also needed to capitalize on their strong start. The Blue Devils were favored by 15 points coming into the game, but Miami completed the college basketball upset, winning 76-74.

Miami Basketball Pulls Out Close Win Over Duke

Both teams opened the half scoring 32 points apiece. That’s when the intensity ramped up. As the second half of the game carried on, Miami started to beat Duke defenders off of the dribble. The game came down to the last minute, as Miami’s Kameron McGusty made a go-ahead layup with 23 seconds left. Miami’s Isaiah Wong hit a free throw to push the Hurricanes’ lead to two with eight seconds left.

On Duke’s subsequent possession, Wendell Moore Jr. pushed the ball up the court and attempted a three that bounced out and went out of bounds. It was called Duke’s ball, and they were given another opportunity with 0.7 seconds left.

Duke freshman Trevor Keels missed the game-winning three, as Miami completed the college basketball upset.

Miami and Duke Moving Forward

This win for Miami adds to their nine-game win streak. The Hurricanes have a chance to land inside the college basketball rankings this Monday. With the win from North Carolina, two names are being established as ACC basketball contenders.

Moving forward for Duke, after coming off of a COVID-19 outbreak, Duke was able to push through a win against Georgia Tech. Unlike Georgia Tech, Miami was able to battle against Duke. This loss gives Duke their second loss of the season and their first conference loss. Duke will continue to see votes towards the top of the top-25 moving forward.
