Mavericks vs Jazz Prediction

Long story short, this series should already be over. The Mavericks have dominated the Jazz from a statistical standpoint both with and without Luka Doncic on the floor. Unheralded players like Jalen Brunson, Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith and Maxi Kleber have all provided massive impacts throughout this First Round series.

Upon Doncic making his return in Game 4, he promptly dropped a 30-point line on Utah. A nasty step-back three-pointer in the closing minutes seemed to be the dagger shot for a 3-1 Mavs series lead. Unfortunately, Dwight Powell missed two free throws in the final minute which left the door open for the Jazz. One could argue that free throws were the only reason that the Jazz were even in that game late. Utah held a ridiculous 42-23 advantage over Dallas in free throw attempts in Game 4. While foul shooting may have been kind to the Jazz in Game 4, three-point shooting has been a nightmare for the 5-seed throughout this entire series.

The Jazz attempted 39.7 three-pointers per game this season, the second-most of any team in the NBA. Thus, Utah’s failure to convert from beyond the arc in this series has been a major problem. Credit the Mavs’ defense for forcing the Jazz off the line and into secondary offensive sets. Dallas boasts a resounding +108 scoring advantage from three-point range through the first five games of this series. Add in the fact that Donovan Mitchell is now dealing with a quad injury and it seems more than likely that tonight will be his final game in a Utah Jazz uniform.
