Horizon League basketball is starting to make a name for itself. Everyone expected Patrick Baldwin Jr. to be the leader and move UW-Milwaukee to the top of the conference. That has now turned into Oakland and Cleveland State leading the conference. The Horizon League is now a combined 34-60 on the year, as conference play starts to ramp up.

With that being said let’s take a look at what happened in Horizon League basketball this week.

Horizon League Basketball Weekly Headlines

For another week, the Horizon League once again has no ranked teams. In the College Insider mid-major rankings, Oakland is the lone representative of the Horizon League, at the 11th spot. With conference play beginning shortly, we should be able to get a better look at what the conference will turn out to be.

Oakland Extends Their Win Streak to Five

Oakland started this game in a hurry, ripping off a 13-2 run with Micah Parrish hitting a three and Trey Townsend throwing down a dunk. The Golden Grizzlies never looked back, as 10 out of the team’s 11 players who appeared in this game scored. The story of the game was IUPUI’s inability to hold onto the ball. Oakland converted 32 points off of 23 turnovers from IUPUI. The Jaguars were also unable to hit the three-point shot, making only 2-16 from deep.

Oakland continues to sit atop Horizon League basketball after they went to IUPUI and dominated the Jaguars, 78-45.

Jayson Woodrich Leads Cleveland State to Sixth Straight Win

Cleveland State took on Wright State with a six-game win streak on the line. The story of this game was Jayson Woodrich, who came off of the bench to score 17 points and help lead the Vikings to a victory over the Wright State Raiders. During Woodrich’s game, he made five three-pointers. D’Moi Hodge scored 14, while Tre Gomillion scored 13 and Broc Finstuen added another 11. Cleveland State shot 9-18 from the three-point line as a team. They were also able to turn Wright State over 14 times, with 10 of those turnovers being steals.

With this win, Cleveland State sits in second place at a half-game behind Oakland in the Horizon League this year.
