In a conference that has been lackluster this year to say the least, a couple of Horizon League basketball teams have stood above the rest. One of those teams is the Oakland Golden Grizzlies. Coming into the game against IUPUI, the Golden Grizzlies were number one in the Horizon League, with a record of 6-2 and 1-0 in the conference.

Jamal Cain Leads the Way for Oakland

One player who has seen a successful transfer this year is Oakland forward Jamal Cain. The transfer from Marquette was once again a main contributor for the Golden Grizzlies, scoring 14 points. Cain now is averaging 21.2 points per game this year, adding just under 11 rebounds. Jalen Moore scored 15 points in this game, making all 10 of his free throws on the day. Micah Parrish and Trey Townsend contributed another 14 points each (28 total) to help lead Oakland over IUPUI.

Oakland started this game in a hurry, ripping off a 13-2 run with Parrish hitting a three and Townsend throwing down a dunk. The Golden Grizzlies never looked back, as 10 out of the team’s 11 players who appeared in this game scored. The story of the game was IUPUI’s inability to hold onto the ball. Oakland converted 32 points off of 23 turnovers from IUPUI. The Jaguars were also unable to hit the three-point shot, making only 2-16 from deep.

Oakland Wins Fifth Game in a Row | Horizon League Basketball

The win over the IUPUI Jaguars gives Oakland their fifth win in a row after starting the season 2-2. This is good enough to give them a half-game lead in the number one spot in Horizon League basketball. Cleveland State currently sits second in the conference, with a 6-2 record after starting 0-2.

The Golden Grizzlies get an opportunity to continue their win streak when they travel to Bowling Green on Dec 7. The real test comes for them on the 21st when they have to travel to East Lansing for an inter-state matchup against Michigan State.
