One of the most successful recent free agent signings by the Green Bay Packers came when they signed linebacker De’Vondre Campbell in 2021. While there were some questions off the bat of how he’d fit in with the defense, Campbell answered those questions quickly.
Campbell quickly racked up the accolades, including becoming the first Packers player since the great Ray Nitschke in 1966 to be named as an All-Pro linebacker.
Thanks to his play on the field and his major role in the defense, the Packers signed him to a much more lucrative deal in the offseason for five years and $50 million. Sadly, Packers fans will most remember his quick decline in play that led to his release by the team in the 2024 offseason.
De’Vondre Campbell’s First Outburst
Campbell didn’t take too kindly to the Packers parting ways and made sure that his followers on social media knew it. Campbell said that “all year I was out there tryna make people right because they were busting coverages” and that he was “badly misused” by then-defensive coordinator Joe Barry.
As one could expect, the Packers fans who support all their players even after their time in Green Bay quickly turned on him. Campbell was later signed by the San Francisco 49ers and it appeared the saga had come to an end.
After he was signed, Campbell played a big role in a 49ers defense that was decimated with injuries causing Campbell to start for 12 of the first 13 games. However, once again Campbell showed his immaturity in Week 15. Campbell was moved to a bench role after linebacker Dre Greenlaw returned and when multiple teammates went down with injuries, Campbell refused to enter the game in the second half. He then made it worse by walking off the locker room afterward.
As one could expect, most people weren’t happy with the move. He was chastised by his coaches, teammates and seemingly everyone in the media. His actions saw him get suspended by the team for the remainder of the regular season. For as bad as that period was, it again appeared his time in the spotlight was over.
De’Vondre Campbell Twitter Rant Gets NSFW
All good things must come to an end eventually and Campbell felt the need to thrust himself into the limelight again this past weekend. He went on a NSFW tirade on Twitter and you’ll have to read his own tweets to get a full picture of what transpired.
For a player who is currently an NFL free agent and already on thin ice, his choice to take his grievances to social media was certainly a choice. Since those tweets, Campbell has once again gone radio silent, but for how long remains the question. If his behavior in the past has shown anything, it’s that this is not the last we’ll hear from him.
Once again, Campbell has shown the 49ers were right to suspend him for the year and that the Packers were right to get rid of him. His mentality of “me against the world” is clearly something he struggles with and has convinced himself is the case. If the Packers faithful can learn anything from this entire saga, it’s that the team did a pretty darn good job of keeping him off the air and out of the team’s way.
All things aside, it’s clear that Campbell needs some type of help and we certainly hope he gets whatever it is that he needs. With this recent outburst though, it is abundantly clear that he won’t take an NFL field any time soon. The only question left to answer is when we will inevitably hear from him again.
