As crazy as the fall was for college football, the FCS Spring season is even crazier. The tally of teams who have opted out of the Spring Season is eight. Mind you, this number doesn’t include the teams that didn’t even attempt a spring season. Chattanooga, Illinois State, Albany, and Cal Poly all decided to shut down their season at the end of March. New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Western Illinois, and Wofford all shut down in early April. Rhode Island decided to opt out, even after they started 2-0. On top of the opt outs, the playoff picture is more foggy than ever.

In our weekly power rankings, Weber State maintained its grasp on the top spot. However, unless they put in a great performance on Saturday versus Idaho State, they might slip. The Bison of North Dakota State seem ready to pounce and grab the top spot should Weber State trip up. Next weekend we have some great games that will have playoff implications. However, it doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the games this weekend as well. Let’s dive right in!

The Big South is up for grabs on Saturday. Kennesaw State (4-0) will travel to New Jersey to take on Monmouth (2-0). The Hawks are a veteran laden team, led by freshman quarterback Tony Muskett. The signal-caller will get his first true taste of this annual matchup. Muskett will be a legend at Monmouth, if he can guide the Hawks to a big win over the Owls.

However, beating the Owls will be no easy task. Kennesaw State boasts one of the best rushing attacks in the country. Quarterback Tommy Bryant has only thrown seven passes this year, competing four of them. The Owls have a combined 12 touchdowns on the ground this year. One player to watch during this game is Owls wide receiver Will Haigler. They don’t throw much, but when they do, be on the lookout for Haigler.

Prediction: (6) Kennesaw State 24, Monmouth 20 (KST -2, Under 53)

As the playoffs loom over the rest of the regular season, Eastern Washington is ready for another shot at Idaho. The Eagles played the Vandals on February 27th. This is a very rare occasion of a regular season rematch, but the Eagles want to take advantage of the opportunity. Running back Tamarick Pierce leads the team in rushing, accounting for almost 400 yards. However, Eagles quarterback Eric Barriere, is the leader on the field. He has thrown 16 touchdowns and only six interceptions.

On the other sideline, the Vandals are in a bit of trouble. After their victory in February, they have gone 1-2 since then, making this a must-win game. Idaho has used three quarterbacks this season, with a little bit of success. However, if Idaho wants to win at Roos Field, they need to find a way to slow down Barriere.

Prediction: (9) Eastern Washington 34, Idaho 28 (IDA +12.5, Over 53.5)

This is the biggest OVC matchup of the year. (10) Jacksonville State is 8-2 overall and 5-1 in the OVC. They dominated Eastern Illinois last weekend, 44-23. On offense, the Gamecocks rely a lot on the legs of running back Josh Samuel. He has nearly 700 rushing yards on the season, including six touchdown runs. Quarterback Zion Webb has been up and down this season, but is capable of having a big game on Sunday. He’s thrown for 10 touchdowns and only seven interceptions.

As for Murray State, they would love to get the huge win. The Gamecocks lead the all-time series, 15-2. The Racers have a balanced offensive attack that can exploit some holes in the Gamecock defense. Quarterback Preston Rice has been great this year. He has passed for seven touchdowns on the year, and used his legs to get into the end zone six more times. This game does have playoff implications, but Murray State would just love to get a victory here.

Prediction: (10) Jacksonville State 27, Murray State 21 (MSU +9, Under 52)
