College football’s return has been fun, but having the NFL and fantasy football return tonight has me all giddy. You’ve drafted your fantasy football team, and now you have to make some tough decisions in figuring out who to start. With no stats or real film from this season to base decisions on, your fantasy football start ’em, sit ’em decisions could get tough.

That’s where I come in! Today, we will go over the fantasy start/sit quarterbacks for Week 1 of the NFL season. Now, let’s establish some boundaries here. I am not here to say Lamar Jackson is a “start” this week. We’ll leave that groundbreaking analysis to the AI slop creators. Instead, I will be discussing those who are worthy of a conversation and who may be on the fringe of being a QB1 this week.

Now, labeling a player as a “sit” does not mean they are a must-sit player. As always, check out our weekly fantasy football rankings here. You can also become a member to join a group chat with Zach Brunner and other members where all fantasy football start ’em, sit ’em questions are welcome!

Fantasy Football Start ’em, Sit ’em: Week 1 QBs

Start: Jared Goff Fantasy Outlook vs Saints

We’re starting the season with a trend I’ve mentioned far too often, so take a drink if you’ve heard this one before: you need to start Jared Goff when he plays at home. So, featured in the Week 1 Fantasy Football Start ’em, Sit ’em, I’m a big fan of Goff against the New Orleans Saints.

Last season, Goff averaged 19.6 fantasy points in home games versus 15.6 points in road games. This is a pattern as well, with him averaging 19.9 at home and 15.4 fantasy points in road games over the past three seasons. This split is nice, and it looks even better after viewing what the Saints are featuring in their secondary this season.

With Isiah Pacheco out, we could see Detroit lean heavier on Jahmyr Gibbs this week. Given his versatile skill set, this could mean a pass-heavy approach in the first half, leading to easy points for Jared Goff and those who choose to start him.

Start: Kyler Murray Fantasy Outlook vs Packers

The Minnesota Vikings have yet another quarterback. However, the good news is that even a monkey could operate the Kevin O’Connell offense with success (no offense, Nine). Kyler Murray is not a great quarterback, but he has a tremendous receiving corps and a juicy matchup with Green Bay.

The Packers got rid of two of their top three edge rushers this offseason, and their best one is out hurt. It seems unlikely that Green Bay will be able to generate a consistent pass rush without blitzing. The issue for them is that their two starting cornerbacks are Keisean Nixon and rookie Brandon Cisse. If you think Cisse is a really good player, fine. That means either Justin Jefferson or Jordan Addison will line up against Nixon, and Murray still has TJ Hockenson, Jauan Jennings and Aaron Jones to throw to.

At least one receiver should be wide open for Kyler Murray every play, and Green Bay’s pass rush likely won’t be very good. When they do get after the passer, Murray’s legs should help to extend plays, slowing the pass rush and racking up fantasy points.

Sean Payton QBs in Week 1 his last 5 seasons:

2025 Nix — 176 yards
2024 Nix — 138 yards
2023 Wilson — 177 yards
2021 Winston — 148 yards*
2020 Brees — 160 yards

No 200-yard games. Bo Nix at Arrowhead this week feels like a spot to avoid. (o/u 43.5) pic.twitter.com/G4WXPuak5l

Sit: Patrick Mahomes Fantasy Outlook vs Broncos

It is awesome that Patrick Mahomes was able to heal fast enough to be ready for Week 1. He also was one of my favorite overall value picks in fantasy football drafts this season, as his ADP was QB13 despite being QB4 on a per-game basis last season.

However, you should not be starting him against the Denver Broncos unless you have to. The projected point total for this game is 43.5, which is one of the lowest of the weekend. It makes sense, considering Denver has one of the best defenses in the NFL. They had a back-breaking pass rush last season, leading the league with a 10.43% sack rate. Denver also allowed just 5.4 yards per pass attempt, which also led the league.

The last time Patrick Mahomes passed for multiple touchdowns against the Broncos was January 2023. I’m not convinced the streak snaps this week, which is why he is in our Fantasy Football Start ’em, Sit ’em.

Sit: Bo Nix Fantasy Outlook at Chiefs

In the same game, I’m not sure you should be starting Bo Nix. We already went over the low projected point total. Along with that, Sean Payton has often run a conservative offense in the first week of the season. In fact, he hasn’t had a quarterback reach 200 yards in his past five seasons. Yes, Jameis Winston still crushed Green Bay in 2023. But as a Packer fan who remembers that game too well, an aggressive offense was not close to being needed from the Saints in that game.

The Broncos’ defense is so good that Payton knows they have a great chance to win as long as the offense protects the ball. Combined with this philosophy, the best way to beat the Chiefs is to keep their offense off the field. Expect Denver to lean on the run, hit short passes, and try to grind out a road win. That may be great for their record, but it’s not great for fantasy football.
