The fallout from WrestleMania 42 continues this weekend at WWE Backlash. Although the card consists of just five matches, there’s an argument to be made that the build heading into the event has been better than ‘Mania itself. One of the more compelling storylines on the card is who will emerge as the mystery tag team partner for Danhausen.
What started as a comedic bit has quietly become one of the most buzzworthy angles heading into Saturday night — and the “who” is still anybody’s guess.
Danhausen at WWE Backlash 2026: How We Got Here
Some fans might not love the fact that Danhausen is getting a match at a PLE — I’m all for it. For starters, his tag team match against The Miz and Kit Wilson quite literally fits the spirit of Backlash, given that this feud was featured at WrestleMania. Second, Danhausen has been one of the hottest things going in WWE since his rocky debut at Elimination Chamber. Finally, The Miz and Wilson are fully deserving of a big-time match and any push that may come on the other side of it.
The issue for Danhausen, of course, is that he needs a partner. As of this week’s Monday Night RAW, the only hint we have to go on is Michael Cole telling viewers on commentary that the mystery partner will be “somebody that loves money.” The comment sent speculation running wild online.
Depending on how literally you want to take that, any number of names could emerge as legitimate candidates. Let’s break down the top contenders to step up and team with Danhausen at WWE Backlash.
Danhausen’s Mystery Partner at WWE Backlash 2026: Odds and Top Candidates
The table below lists the WWE betting odds for who will be Danhausen’s mystery tag team partner at Backlash. We’ll discuss some of the more notable names on the list in greater detail.
| Name | Odds |
|---|---|
| CM Punk | -200 |
| Joe Hendry | +200 |
| Mr. Iguana | +300 |
| Jelly Roll | +400 |
| Elton Prince | +450 |
| Carmelo Hayes | +500 |
| Royce Keys | +600 |
| R-Truth | +800 |
| Matt Cardona | +1000 |
| Shinsuke Nakamura | +1000 |
| Johnny Gargano | +1500 |
| John Cena | +2000 |
| LA Knight | +2500 |
| Oba Femi | +3000 |
| Stephen A. Smith | +5000 |
CM Punk (-200)
It’s somewhat interesting to see CM Punk priced as a significant odds-on favorite to be the Danhausen mystery partner at WWE Backlash. We haven’t seen or heard much from the former World Heavyweight Champion since WrestleMania — but Punk and Danhausen are close friends, and their various backstage social media clips suggest this is a very plausible pairing.
Mr. Iguana (+300)
While primarily performing in Triple A, Mr. Iguana has made appearances on NXT in recent weeks — including this past Tuesday, where he teamed with Lola Vice in an actual match. He hasn’t been featured on mainstream WWE programming since the Royal Rumble, but he did recently make off with some of Danhausen’s “human monies” in a social media clip that got plenty of traction online.
John Cena (+2000)
It has been confirmed that John Cena will be at WWE Backlash this Saturday. His role as the WrestleMania host put him right in the middle of Danhausen’s feud with The Miz and Kit Wilson. The main obstacle here is that Cena has made it abundantly clear his retirement match against Gunther last year was his last. Still, Danhausen did tag him on X earlier this week as part of his ongoing partner search, so never say never.
R-Truth (+800)
John Cena may not be lacing them up one more time, but “Ron Cena” certainly could. Although R-Truth is currently holding tag team gold alongside Damian Priest, he has been involved in a number of backstage segments with Danhausen in recent weeks. A scenario where Truth’s signature confusion leads to “Ron Cena” showing up as Danhausen’s partner would be hilarious. It could also inject some much-needed energy into a pretty stale SmackDown tag team division.
Jelly Roll (+400)
The fit here is natural given that Jelly Roll was briefly involved in this feud prior to WrestleMania. However, given the broader backlash (pun intended) toward celebrity involvement in WWE programming, and Jelly’s absence since Night 1 of ‘Mania, this one feels like a stretch.
Elton Prince (+450)
It has been over a year since Elton Prince suffered a neck injury that reportedly required a second surgery as recently as January 2026 — which makes him being the mystery partner feel like a very unlikely outcome. It sure would make for a great storyline, though, given that Prince is the long-time tag team partner of Kit Wilson.
Shane McMahon (not listed)
Although not listed in the WWE betting odds, Michael Cole’s “somebody who loves money” comment sparked widespread speculation about a possible return for Shane-O-Mac. It’s worth noting that the last time we saw McMahon in WWE was at WrestleMania 39, when an injury derailed what was supposed to be an impromptu match against none other than The Miz. Thus, he is a legitimate candidate based on narrative.
Stephen A. Smith (+5000)
Ever since Danhausen crashed the First Take set and cursed Stephen A. Smith ahead of WrestleMania, there have been rumblings that the ESPN personality could get more involved with WWE this year. This is obviously a long shot, but if done correctly, it could be genuinely amusing.
