D.K. Metcalf Fantasy Breakdown

There aren’t many wide receivers in the NFL that are built the way DK Metcalf is, 6’4” 226 pounds and he’s fast. Upon coming into the league last year, there were some concerns with his combine stats and overall ability to play at the professional level which is the reason he fell to the second round after originally being labeled a first-rounder. As for a fantasy perspective, he had major potential to contribute points in all categories.

Being drafted to a team that runs the ball more often than not already put him into a rough situation where he had to prove that he could play at the professional level. At the beginning of the 2019 season, it seemed that the Seattle Seahawks didn’t want to utilize him too much and that he had to gain their trust in order to be an important part of their offense. Down the second half stretch of the season, he certainly delivered in a big way.

Metcalf Fantasy Outlook

In 2019, Metcalf hauled in 58% of the passes thrown to him, something impressive for a rookie. The first half of the season was slow but through the last eight games he caught 38 compared to just 20 through the first eight games. If he can continue to make big plays and be consistent, he has WR1 upside in fantasy.  Averaging 11.7 fantasy points per game in PPR formats was solid for the rookie season, but if Metcalf can perform well all 16 games, you’d have yourself a player with potential of being a top-15 fantasy wide receiver.

The Seahawks made an addition to the wide receiver room in  Philip Dorsett this offseason, but he’s similar to Tyler Lockett in size and play style, but the big-play guy will still likely be Metcalf in the offense. If Russell Wilson passes more in 2020, there’s plenty of potential for Metcalf to lead the target share due to his jumping ability and size.

With an impressive 15.5 yards per catch in 2019, Metcalf will likely float around the same in 2020 because he runs only a few different types of routes downfield. If he can add a few more routes to his toolbelt, he’ll be the first or second option for Wilson.

D.K. Metcalf ADP

As of now according to the Fantasy Football Calculator, Metcalf’s ADP is 4.09, WR18 in PPR leagues. He started the month of June going as a fifth-rounder, but many fantasy players have become compelled to draft him earlier due to his year-two breakout potential. In 2019, his ADP was 11.12 at the WR53 so there must be some belief that he’ll breakout in his second season.

If the Seahawks make him the primary target and he can spread his game out to all parts of the field, he can take that WR1 spot from Tyler Lockett rather quickly. I’d grab him anywhere you can in all fantasy formats.
