Looking at the best college football bets for Week 5 of the NCAA season. This week includes Tennessee at Mississippi State.
Rough week on the betting front last week, but Week 5 brings a massive slate of big-time contests and under-the-radar games. Auburn hits the road looking for a top-25 win, Ohio State travels to the West Coast for its first road test of the season at Washington, and Tennessee takes its high-powered offense on the road to Starkville for a showdown with Mississippi State.
Here are the three best college football bets that I am looking at for Week 5 of the NCAA season.
College Football Week 5 Best Bets
Auburn at No 9. Texas A&M
Auburn at Texas A&M is just one of the massive games on the Week 5 college football betting slate. The game has big SEC and playoff implications. If Auburn loses, it is hard to see a path for them to reach the playoffs, especially at 0-2 in the SEC and with their remaining schedule. A win for Texas A&M would continue their climb in the rankings and solidify their state in the top-10.
The high-powered Aggie offense is led by Marcel Reed at quarterback. The sophomore has thrown for 869 yards and nine touchdowns while rushing for 142 yards and another score. Texas A&M has scored 41 or more points in every contest this year, including a road win at No. 22 Notre Dame in Week 3. Auburn is coming off a 24-17 road SEC loss at Oklahoma. The Tigers did a pretty good job of slowing down the Sooner offense, but I believe this Aggie offensive attack is better. The Texas A&M defense has allowed more than 20 points in every contest this year, so I think this Auburn offense can find the end zone this time and keep this game close.
Although a big game, this one could fly under the radar, given the other big matchups. But I expect a lot of points, so I’m taking the over.
Best College Football Bets: Over 52.5
No. 1 Ohio State at Washington
Ohio State hits the road for the first time this year when they head to the West Coast to take on Washington. We still aren’t sure how good Ohio State is. The Buckeyes have a win over Texas to start the year, but the Longhorns haven’t looked as good as expected.
Meanwhile, Washington comes in at 3-0 and has one of the best quarterbacks that no one is talking about. Sophomore Demond Williams Jr. has been spectacular this year, throwing for 778 yards and six touchdowns; he has also run for 220 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Williams is coming off the Apple Cup, where he was 16-for-19 for 298 yards and four touchdown passes, along with 88 yards rushing and another score.
This line opened higher and has been bet down. Ohio State is the better team, but first road trip of the season, I think Washington can keep this one close. Get this before it falls to +7.
Best College Football Bets: Washington +7.5
No. 15 Tennessee at Mississippi State
This is one of the sneakier games on a slate that is loaded with ranked matchups. Tennessee comes in at 3-1 with its lone loss coming to Georgia. Mississippi State enters the week at 4-0 after a home win against Northern Illinois last week.
Tennessee is led by transfer quarterback Joey Aguilar, who has probably been better than even Tennessee could have hoped for. The senior has thrown for 1,124 yards and 12 touchdowns in his first year as a Vol. This is an explosive offense Tennessee has, averaging 58 points per game on the season. Mississippi State might be the surprise of the year in the SEC. The Bulldogs won only 2 games last year and have already doubled their win total from a year ago. They also have a home win over Arizona State in Starkville.
The over/under is set at 63.5 points for this contest. That is a lot of points, but no one has been able to slow down this Tennessee offense so far this year. I think Mississippi State will find success against a Tennessee defense that is far from elite.
Best College Football Bets: Over 63.5
