Like most years, the Coastal Athletic Association will be a one-bid league in 2024. And also just like most years, it is one of the most competitive mid-major college basketball conferences this season. With four teams ranked inside the Kenpom top 125, the winner of the CAA basketball tournament will likely find themselves as a 13 or 14-seed on Selection Sunday.

Let’s take a closer look into this conference and decide which are the best bets to win the CAA basketball tournament.

2024 CAA Conference Tournament Bracket

All with conference records of 12-6 or better, College of Charleston, Drexel, Hofstra and UNC Wilmington, will receive double byes in the CAA Tournament. This is a big advantage over the field as they only have to win three games to punch their March Madness ticket.

Top 4 Seeds Breakdown – CAA Tournament

College of Charleston

The Charleston Cougars won the CAA regular season title thanks to their potent offense that ranks top 50 nationally in adjusted offensive efficiency. They take care of the ball, offensive rebound well, and shoot A LOT of threes. A whopping 47.3 percent of Charleston’s field goal attempts come from beyond the arc which is the 13th-highest total in the country. Nobody on the team averages more than 13 points, but the Cougars depend on their depth in scoring, as six players contribute over eight points per game.

Drexel

The Drexel Dragons enter this tournament as the 2-seed, having won five of their last six games. They are one of the better rebounding teams in all of college basketball, as they retrieve 34 percent of their missed shots and hold the 18th-highest defensive rebound rate in the country. Much like Charleston, Drexel relies on depth scoring, with a sophomore guard leading the team in scoring at 12.6 points per game.

Hofstra

Unlike the top two seeds, the Pride of Hofstra rely on two of the league’s top six scorers to do the bulk of their scoring. Senior guard Tyler Thomas is the NCAA’s third-leading scorer, at 22.3 points per game, while Darlinstone Dubar adds 18.1 points. With those two leading the way, Hofstra relies on the three-ball for much of their offense, shooting them at the 20th-highest rate in the country and making an impressive 37 percent of them.

UNC Wilmington

The UNC Wilmington Seahawks are another high-powered offense, ranking just outside the top 50 in offensive efficiency. Forward Trazarien White is arguably the best player in the conference, scoring 19.6 points per game and pulling down seven rebounds. Wilmington is not heading into this tournament playing their best basketball, having suffered losses to Elon and Campbell in the last two and a half weeks.

Best Bets to Win CAA Basketball Tournament 2024

Hofstra (+300)

The Pride enters the CAA basketball tournament having won eight of their last 10 games. Their only losses occurred on the road against Drexel and Charleston. They have the likely CAA Player of the Year in Thomas and shoot it well from outside. The draw is also somewhat favorable for Hofstra as they avoid the conference’s two best offenses, Charleston and UNCW, until the championship. A potential rubber match in the semis with Drexel is something they’d have to feel confident about as it took a 53 percent three-point shooting night for the Dragons to beat Hofstra by two at home.

Longshot: Towson (+1200)

The Towson Tigers will have to win four games to clinch a tournament berth, but neither North Carolina A&T nor William & Mary should offer much resistance in their first game. They’d likely have to beat both UNCW and Charleston just to make the championship game; however, the Tigers are as well equipped to slow down those offenses as anyone in the conference. They often struggle to score but have already shown they can compete with the conference’s top teams, having already defeated four of the five teams other with a top-six seed.
