As I mentioned last weekend, the spring FCS spring football season has been just as crazy as the FBS fall season. This weekend’s slate of games will go a long way in determining seeding for the postseason. We finally get to see (4) James Madison play a tough opponent, as the Dukes will host a good Richmond team that also has postseason dreams. In the MVFC, this weekend’s showdown between (3) South Dakota State and (1) NDSU, will determine the automatic qualifier for the conference. Another MVFC playoff hopeful, North Dakota, had it’s already re-scheduled game versus Youngstown State cancelled…

After all the waiting, the Cleveland Browns and free agent edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney finally struck a deal this afternoon. Clowney was flown in to Cleveland last night and this morning he passed his physical. With the news of Julian Edelman reportedly failing a physical for the Patriots, Browns fans were on pins and needles waiting for the results of Clowney’s exam. Well, all is well and good and Jadeveon Clowney is a Cleveland Brown. This visit to Cleveland was the third in one calendar year for Clowney. The Browns made a strong push for him before the 2020 season,…

Every Monday, we will be releasing our FCS Spring Football Rankings, with some of the major storylines over the weekend. This week, NDSU finally makes the jump to number one. While the Bison do have the top spot locked down at the moment, that could all change come Saturday when they take on (3) South Dakota State. Other than the shift at the top, our rankings remained mostly the same, with a little bit of movement at the bottom of our poll. Let’s check out our updated FCS Rankings, to go along with some of the big storylines throughout the country. FCS…

Last night, Josina Anderson of ESPN reported that the Cleveland Browns were working to arrange a second visit with free agent edge-rusher Jadeveon Clowney. The belief around the league is that after his second visit, the Browns and Clowney will strike a deal. If Clowney does indeed make a trip back to Cleveland, it will be his third time in the city in two years. Andrew Berry and the rest of the front office hosted Clowney last year, before he ultimately decided to sign with the Tennessee Titans. The edge-rusher out of South Carolina played in eight games last year,…

As crazy as the fall was for college football, the FCS Spring season is even crazier. The tally of teams who have opted out of the Spring Season is eight. Mind you, this number doesn’t include the teams that didn’t even attempt a spring season. Chattanooga, Illinois State, Albany, and Cal Poly all decided to shut down their season at the end of March. New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Western Illinois, and Wofford all shut down in early April. Rhode Island decided to opt out, even after they started 2-0. On top of the opt outs, the playoff picture is more…

This morning while browsing the internet, I stumbled upon a very interesting article. Jeff Kolpack, a North Dakota State beat writer, was pointing out some things about COVID testing in sports. His idea behind the article is that at some point we need to dial back COVID testing on athletes. We can’t have families and friends of players traveling across the country to find out a game had been cancelled. It was pointed out that a Bison player’s father drove eight hours to only find out the game was off. He also noted that Northern Iowa head coach Mark Farley…

Earlier this week, the NFL announced that the league owners would be voting on 13 rule or bylaw changes that could come into effect as soon as the 2021 season. One of those such rule changes is a proposal by the Kansas City Chiefs to change the NFL jersey number rule, allowing skill position players to wear single-digit numbers. If this change is implemented, it could have a major wide-spread effect on fans, teams, players and even television networks. If and when implemented, skill position players will be able to wear any number 1-49. It also allows non-quarterback, offensive skill…

In 2018, NFL Draft expert Todd McShay noted that nobody in the 2018 NFL Draft quarterback class was better than Blaine Gabbert was in 2011. It was an odd opinion, considering many NFL front offices thought the draft class was one of the best in recent memory. Among the quarterbacks in that class, you had 2017 Heisman winner Baker Mayfield. He had just completed his last year at Oklahoma, but there were questions about his maturity and height. On top of Mayfield, the draft class consisted of Josh Allen (Wyoming), Josh Rosen (UCLA) and Sam Darnold (USC) in the early…

Every Monday, we will be releasing our FCS Spring Football Rankings, with some of the major storylines over the weekend. I was prepared to move (2) North Dakota State to the top of the rankings, but their huge matchup with (3) South Dakota State was postponed. (1) Weber State was lucky to leave Southern Utah without a blemish on their record. This week, the top-10 was mostly the same, as five teams were idle. Let’s check out our updated FCS Rankings, to go along with some of the big storylines throughout the country. FCS Rankings Weber State (4-0, 4-0) (Beat…
